September 27, 2011 • Page 8 shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com Introducing Paul Scherscligt My name is Paul Scherschligt Married to Jean Scherschligt Parents: late John Scherschligt, and Marge Scherschligt living in Lesterville I have lived in Lesterville, Yankton County all my life I am a member of the ST. John Catholic Church, Lesterville Community Center, and Yankton Search and Rescue. Have been working in emergency service for over 34 years. A proud member of the Lesterville Fire & Rescue for 34 years. Have held many positions within the organization. Had been the chief officer for 20 plus years. As a member of the fire department we have seen a lot of changes in practices to firefighting and emergency medical response. Our agency has seen a wide range of events that have marked our lives forever. The best things that get us through the tough times are the members of the emergency services family. Without them we would have no emergency service in the country. As of January 18, I became the Yankton County Emergency Manager. As the Yankton County Manager the job has been very exciting and challenging. One might have thought that the job would be mainly setting behind the desk. But I was wrong! As most people know we had a major flood on the Missouri, flooding on the James River, and a severe hail storm that went through the county this year. I remember on May 27, I got phone call from Pierre that there would be a teleconference call on the May 28, at 8 am and I had to be on it. On the 28th I set off to the office for this phone call. On the way to the office I received a phone call from the state office Emergency Management telling me that there were 500,000 sandbags heading to Yankton. I said ok with a dumb look on my face. I ask, why. They said you will find out on your conference call. What a way to start the day. The conference call told us that the Missouri river would be going to record heights and that we need to start filling sand bags for structure protection. I got this thought in my mind of – I was told the look on my face was one of, how soon can I retire! I call the Emergency Operations Staff to come in a set up a plan of action. The next few days became a little hectic with planning for the event. Getting equipment, sand, food, drinking water, and a whole lot of other stuff. The one thing that I need to say about the entire event was the dedication the members of the EOC staff, the volunteers that came in to fill sandbags, the business that stepped up to help with equipment and supplies, county and city employees that came to help, and all the citizens of Yankton county. Made the event work without a hitch. It is so wonderful to work for such a great county. They made me look good. Thank you all. In all there were 475,000 plus sand bags filled, there were on an average each day 175 people working in the event, 40 inmates, and 100 National Guard members. Do I any regrets for taking on the job. No, would not change anything, oh maybe one thing. Need to put in a hot line in for Diet mountain dew supply. sincerly, Paul Scherschligt Yankton County Emergency Management Salute Our Guardians with the Phone: 605-665-5884 Fax: 605-665-5882 216 W. 4th Street Yankton, SD 57078 Salute Our Guardians with the Phone: 605-665-5884 Fax: 605-665-5882 216 W. 4th Street Yankton, SD 57078 certified public accountants Harry Lane, Electrical Contractor • Commercial • Residential • Farm Wiring • Prompt Service • Quality Work • Competitive Prices New Construction or Remodeling • Home 665-6612 2809 Broadway Ave., Yankton, SD 1-800-759-5275 Fax: 605-665-8908 T R U S T E D F O R G E N E R AT I O N S DIRECTORS: Jim Wintz • Jerry Wintz • Paul Wintz • Steve Wintz www.wintzrayfuneralhome.com 2901 Douglas Yankton, SD 57078-4841 605-665-3644 Fax 605-665-3646 1-800-765-6213 212 Walnut Street, Historic Downtown Yankton 605-665-2067 If you would like to support our Guardians and advertise your business call us at 605-665-5884. 605-665-9884 NOW OPEN AT 11 a.m. FOR NOON LUNCH – MONDAY-SATURDAY SUNDAY 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. A Proud Salute to our Guardians DAKOTA ARCHERY & OUTDOOR SPORTS 605-665-8340 2305 E.
