December 20 Mary Ellen Hornstra is retiring from the Yankton School District after 34 years. She has spent 30 of those years teaching family and consumer science. December 22 MMC Softball Coach Albert Fernandez is battling Stage 4 lung cancer. He is currently receiving treatment in Texas. He has an army of people supporting him known as Al’s Army. Support for Fernandez has poured in from many sources. MMC athletic department has organized a benefit raffle. December 27 Alex Kocer of Wagner and Lexi Steffen of Hartington were selected the Press & Dakotan Male and Female Athlete of the Year. Kocer holds five state titles for Class B Wrestling. He is one of five wrestlers to win five or more wrestling titles in South Dakota history. Steffen is a three sport star for Hartington Cedar Catholic and helped lead her volleyball team to their first state title since 1989.
