At least that was the pitch for the first movie, “Jurassic Park,” eight years earlier. Things went more chaotic than planned in the first three Jurassic movies. Standing in long lines was replaced by running from raptors. The snacks on the menu turned out to be the humans who couldn’t escape threats like the Tyrannosaurus rex. The doors are open again to the exotic location with “Jurassic World.” Before you buy your ticket for the summer thrill ride, here’s a visitor’s guide. SEQUEL LAND This is the fourth film in the series. The others include: “Jurassic Park” (1993): Power breakdown turns preview tour of theme park into a battle for survival. Director: Steven Spielberg. Cast: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough. “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” (1997): Research team is sent to a Site B island to study the dinosaurs. They run into a group looking to take one of the dinosaurs to the mainland. Director: Steven Speilberg. Cast: Jeff Ornette Coleman, Jazz Visionary, Dies At 85 NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz legend Ornette Coleman, the visionary saxophonist who pioneered “free jazz” and won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007, has died. Publicist Ken Weinstein says Coleman died on Thursday at 1 a.m. in Manhattan. He was 85. The Texas-born Coleman was only the second jazz artist to win the Pulitzer in music when he was honored for his 2006 album “Sound Grammar.” His quartet shook up the jazz establishment when it burst on the scene in 1959 with the album “The Shape of Jazz to Come,” which liberated musicians to freely improvise off the melody. He became one of the world’s most respected musicians, his contributions to jazz sometimes compared to those of Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker. Coleman is regarded as one of the greatest innovators in jazz history along with Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker. In the late 1950s, he originated “free jazz,” challenging the bebop establishment by abandoning the conventional song form and liberating musicians to freely improvise off of the melody rather than the underlying chord changes. Coleman broke down the barrier between leader and sidemen, giving his band members freedom to solo, interact and develop their ideas. Though largely selftaught, Coleman would create his own “harmolodic” concept of music, which also became a life philosophy. The music derived from a uniquely free interaction between the musicians, without being tethered to rigid meters and conventional harmonic structure. He referred to it as “removing the caste system from sound.” “I want everyone to have an equal relationship to the results,” Coleman told the AP in a 2007 interview. “I don’t tell them what or how to play. ... Sometimes the drum is leading, sometimes the bass is leading. ... I don’t think I’m the leader, I’m just paying the bills.” In his later years, the jazz revolutionary became a respected elder statesman with the accompanying honors, including membership in the elite American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Grammy lifetime achievement award, even though none of his recordings ever won a Grammy. Director: Joe Johnston. Cast: Sam Neill, William H. Macy, Tea Leoni. “Jurassic World” (2015): Another attempt to open a dinosaur area is made. Results are the same. Director: Colin Trevorrow. Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio. BOOK WORLD “Jurassic Park” and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” were both based on novels by Michael Crichton. The first book was written in 1990. The book actually came out of a screenplay Crichton wrote seven years earlier about a grad student’s effort to re-create a dinosaur. He wrote the second book, “The Lost World,” in 1995 at the urging of fans and director Steven Spielberg. “Jurassic Park III” and “Jurassic World” are based on characters created by Crichton. n JURASSIC, Page 11 MOODY Looking for the best deal in town?
