December 23, 2014 • Page 2 shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com Dave Says Helping Him Stay On Track Like a doctor removing something important, Herb Collins gently peeled the wrapper back from the root ball and tenderly placed the baby tree in the hole. Then he stood and walked around it to see which way he should align it. Actually, looks pretty good just the way it is. So he took his bucket of mixed sand and compost and began sprinkling it down onto the roots and then packing it in gently with his fist. Every few minutes he’d stop and read the directions again. When he ordered the tree, the nurseryman had written back “Are you sure?” Well, that made ol’ Herb laugh. Yes, he was sure. He’s always sure this time of year. He was still chuckling to himself when Janice Thomas walked along the sidewalk. “Hi Herb,” said the high school art teacher. “What is it this year?” “Papaya, Janice. Nice healthy one, don’t you think?” Janice took a close look at the little dark green tree. Papaya. “Isn’t that a tropical tree?” “Sure is,” he said, tucking more dirt around the roots. “I have to read the instructions carefully to get this right.” Janice thought carefully before speaking. “Papayas sure taste good, Herb.” “Sure do. Wouldn’t it be nice if this lives long enough to produce fruit?” “But you’re not expecting …” “Of course not. The first nippy day in autumn will turn this little guy belly up.” He looked up and smiled at Janice’s consternation. “You know that banana tree almost made it to Christmas last year. That was my best so far. We’ll see www.missourivalleyshopper.com MV Shopper M I S S O U R I VA L L E Y how this little guy makes out.” Each year Herb plants something in the front yard that has no chance at all of being there the following spring. He’s done it for years. It gives the neighborhood something to look at and talk about, and it’s fun. “You know, Herb, if you’re looking for fruit, a cherry tree will produce …” “I’m not looking for fruit, Janice,” he said, gently. “I’m looking for glory. Glory!” He laughed. “Where’s the glory in planting something that will grow here? Anyone can do that. But a papaya? Ha! There’s glory in that.” -----------------Brought to you by The Home Country Hour podcast. Check it out at www.themorningbrewpodcast.com. Interested in this spot? She doesn’t need to worry about dental insurance though. You almost never get back what you put into those policies. It’s the kind of stuff a good emergency fund will cover. If she has invested her time and money into what I teach, I’d say she’s pretty serious about getting her finances in order. If it were me, I’d make the money for dental work a gift, not a loan, for turning her financial life around. In your description you never mentioned anything about your daughter being lazy or unwilling to work. You talked about a young lady who’s just starting to build her life, and you’re rewarding smart choices. I think that’s a great idea and will have a major positive impact! *CASH TODAY* We'll Buy Any Car (Any Condition) + Free Same-Day Pickup. Best Cash Offer Guaranteed! Now, she has really started turning her life around. Recently, she learned she needs to have some expensive dental work done. Since she just started trying to manage her money well, she doesn’t have enough saved up for the procedure or dental insurance right now. Do you think we should help by loaning her the money? 1200 4 5 2 — Diana Dear Diana, I’ve learned, after years of writing books, doing a radio show and trying to educate folks about their finances, you can’t make people listen to you. Even with what I do for a living I don’t throw my opinion around unless someone asks. I think you’re smart for realizing there are some boundaries here. But there’s no reason you can’t create a situation where he can ask your opinion. You might begin with talking about some of the mistakes you’ve made in the past. This could help him connect with you, and feel more comfortable 6 1 opening up about his own situation. Once he realizes you haven’t repeated the same mistakes, and have a better life for it, he might just ask how you did it. Then, the door is open! But you can’t become preachy every time someone does something dumb. That will only hurt their feelings and cause them to tune you out completely. — Dave RAMSEY 8 3 8 5 8 Dear Dave, My brother and I recently received an inheritance after our mom died. He’s never been very good with money, so I was proud of him when he used his portion to pay off his debts. But then Dave he went out and financed a van that I know he still can’t afford. I’m afraid he’s falling right back into the same old money problems, but I don’t know how to talk to him about it. GET CASH TODAY for any car/truck. I will buy your car today. Any Condition.
