d in pot? December 1, 2015 • Page 10 Yankton Holiday Parade Of Lights Dec. 4 The House of Gurney Historic District Holiday Parade of Lights will be Friday, Dec. 4, in downtown Yankton. Line-up of the parade will be on Levee Street and Capital beginning at 5:30 p.m. The parade will start at 6 p.m. Businesses, non-profits, churches, schools and individuals are encouraged to decorate a vehicle, trailer, yourself, a pet – anything goes. If your group doesn’t have an idea for decorations, this year you can rent a display. The rentals are units that used to be displayed at Riverside Park. Select the display or display you wish to rent, provide the generator or electrical inverter, extension cords and your group will be set. All rental proceeds go to the Yankton Booster Club as athletes will be available to help set up your float. Contact Alison at 260-6870 to register and/or reserve a display for your truck or trailer. Rentals can be picked up beginning at noon on Friday, Dec. 4. The organizers would like to have as much participation as possible this year and feel providing the displays would make the effort simple to entrants. There is no entry fee for participation, but if you would like to rent a display, a donation is being asked. The parade route will go north on Capital, turning west onto Third Street, south on Cedar and east on Second Street and end at the Gurney Landing large building on Second & Capital. Parade winners will be announced at the end of the parade. First place winners in Commercial, Non-profit & Individual will receive $50 in Chamber Dollars and second place will receive $50 gift certificates from the Twist of Pine. Free hot chocolate will be served. Retailers in the House of Gurney Historic District, including Twist of Pine (in the former Gurney Gas Station) and L. Lenae Designs & Floral (flower and gift shop in the big Gurney building) and The Landing Restaurant (on the corner of Levee and Capital Street) will all be featuring promotions before and after the parade. Photos can be taken with Santa as well in the retail section of the Gurney building. For more information contact Alison Brown at (605) 260-6870. UCC Christmas Coffee/Bake Sale Set The annual Christmas Coffee and Bake Sale will be held at the United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Yankton Dec. 5. Santa’s Workshop will be held at the Studio Art Center in Yankton for the next four weeks, from Nov. 28-Dec. 19. The times of the workshop for crafters will be from 1-4 p.m. Students may attend for one, two, three or four hours. Those who want to focus on Fine Arts, rather than crafts, may arrive at the earlier hour of noon, for a total of four hours. (Just be sure you have had an early lunch, as we serve a mid-day snack at 2:30 p.m., but not lunch). All students wishing to participate need to call Studio Art Center to sign up for a day and a time slot. This year marks the 16th year that Santa’s Workshop annual event has been held. The Studio Art Center is doing things a little different this year, by allowing students to come for shorter times. The shortest time the youngest students can attend with a parent or guardian is for a half-hour. This short program is free of charge to anyone who signs up for the program. The youngest students will create Christmas cards and ornaments with the assistance of their parent or guardian. Because the studio is short staffed, parents must sign up for a time slot by calling Lita Stucky at 665-4686 or 665-0954. A big feature of the Saturday Workshop will be a giant toy/gift give-away for everyone attending the workshop. Each student will also receive a Christmas Treat bag. A program for slightly older students (age 5 up to teens) will also be offered on Saturdays from noon-4 p.m. Students may sign up for anywhere from a one- to fourhour time slot. This longer program was set up so that parents could drop young people off for an exciting time of creating their own craft and gift items. There are dozens of projects to select from. Creating a 3-D Christmas scene with a snowy environment that includes a house, Santa, elves, reindeer and winter trees is the most popular project among students COURTESY PHOTO Pictured here is a small portion of the 150 stuffed animals, toys and gifts that students will be able to choose from for their free take-home Christmas gift during the Santa’s Workshops offered at the Studio Art Center. attending for the longer time period. Also available for students who love painting is a Fine-Arts option. The studio is large enough to accommodate one large table that is set up for those who want to create a canvas painting. The remainder of the large two-room studio will be set up for the creating of various craft projects. Students who sign up for 34 hours should be able to create a canvas painting and some craft items as well. The one- to four-hour program does require a fee. Once registered, the parent may drop off their child while they do their Christmas shopping. All students of all ages will get to select a Christmas gift and be given a treat bag. To view the many projects go to website: studioartcenter.com and click on Santa’s Workshop. Everyone must register to attend by calling: 6654685 or 665-0954. Studio Art Center will also begin hold- ing weekday Fine Arts and Arts & Crafts classes by end of November to early December. Those classes will run through the middle of May. Interested students may sign up during any month between now and May and you will be given that schedule when you call. An error was made in last week’s article. The correct information is that former Studio Art Center student, Jessi Koch will begin her full-time program in the summer of 2016. Her location under name of Courage Art Center is not yet determined. Ms. Stucky is still looking for someone to take over teaching an arts and/or crafts program at 608 W. 8th St. or at a different location of their choice. Check out the Summer Parks & Rec guide for information as to where your child may attend a quality art or craft program in summer of 2016.
