Approximately 69 people per day receive Meals on Wheels in our community, totaling around 1,500 meals per month. Who would not receive their meals if there weren’t enough volunteers? • Around 80 older citizens receive a hot nutritious meal at The Center five days a week. With just over 2,500 meals served each month, what task would not be done to prepare and serve those meals? • The Banquet in Yankton provides meals every week to over 300 people who may not have access to a good meal. Volunteers provide and assist with this meal for the community. What would those who need us most do if The Banquet would not be available? • Around 700 children in Yankton are fortunate to have food in ment agency for volunteers where they are matched with community needs according to their skills, interests and time availability. Last year, a total of 218 RSVP volunteers were engaged in 41,804 volunteer hours of service among dozens of local nonprofit organizations, including schools and human service agencies. According to the Independent Sector, the value of the time RSVP volunteers contributed locally, would amount to $836,080. It is well-documented that volunteering boosts mental (and physical) well-being. Before purchasing the latest gadget, remember that one size doesn’t fit all. Just as you wouldn’t buy the same sweater for everyone, different recipients have different needs when it comes to tech gifts. This season, consider technology gifts that can improve your loved ones’ daily lives by matching devices to their personal interests. Here are some ideas for thoughtful holiday tech gifts for everyone on your list. The Go-Getter Purchasing a gift for a busy parent, a world traveler or a social butterfly? Wearable technology will definitely be at the top of their lists this season. Fitness fanatics will love souped-up Bluetooth headsets and activity trackers; while on-the-go moms will be grateful for the ease a smart watch provides them. Do your homework to ensure whichever gift you pick is compatible with the recipient’s existing technology. If your loved one is an Apple fanatic, you don’t want to get an Android smartwatch. Add extra personalization by taking into account product design. For example, several jewelry designers have introduced necklaces and bracelets that cleverly house sports activity trackers inside the accessory. Skyrocketing to No. 2 on the New York Times Best Sellers List for nonfiction in February, the book has been described by the Los Angeles Times as “a crucial addition to the world of Wilder lore and scholarship.” “The past 12 months have surpassed all of our expectations; we are ecstatic,” says Nancy Tystad Koupal, director of the South Dakota Historical Society Press. A successful national advertising campaign and widespread media attention helped to popularize Wilder’s annotated autobiography, but its design and contents have made the title a favorite among booksellers and readers across the country—in October the Historical Society Press accepted the Midwest Booksellers Choice Award for nonfiction at the annual Heartland Fall Forum in Chicago. “Pioneer Girl” is “this huge beautiful book, and it’s so much fun to spend time with and to hold,” said Stephanie Lauer, an employee at Sundance Books and Music in Reno, Nevada, in an April interview with the Reno News and Review. The story of the small press on the prairie and its runaway best seller, which has sold more than 145,000 copies at last count, continues to gain attention. Most recently the publishing industry’s flagship magazine, Publishers Weekly, carried “Pioneer Girl” on the cover of its Nov. 2 issue, and the Nov. 23 issue features an article. “Pioneer Girl” is the result of extensive research and study into Wilder’s original manuscript about the 16-year journey in which the Ingalls family moved from Kansas to Missouri, 319 Walnut St. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, back to Minnesota and on to Dakota Territory. Yankton, SD 57078 “The goal was to present Wilder’s original work with supplemental information that www.missourivalleyshopper.com would give the reader a better understanding of her life and times,”www.missourivalleyshopper.com says Koupal. “Based on the response the Press has seen over the last year, I would say that we succeeded.” Let Our Family Business keep yours Visit in the go with: our Web site at the Visit our Web site at CLASSIFIEDS! www.missourivalleyshopper.com Visit our Web siteShopper MV at www.missourivalleyshopper.com M I S S O U R I VA L L E Y MV Shopper M I S S O U R I VA L L E Y • Farm Filters • Hydraulic Hoses • Bearings & Seals www.missourivalleyshopper.com Cox Auto Visit our Web site at www.missourivalleyshopper.com 605-665-5884 ‘Holiday Jam With The Hegg www.missourivalleyshopper.com Brothers’ Slated Dec. 16 Historic Downtown Yankton, in conjunction with Yankton Area Concert Association, is bringing “Holiday Jam with the Hegg Brothers” back to Yankton for the third straight year.
