That’s not far off for the Yankton High School (YHS) drama department, which is in the midst of preparing for the upcoming production of the musical “CATS.” A long-running Broadway play by Andrew Lloyd Webber, “CATS” tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as “the Jellicle choice” and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The musical is based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T. S. Eliot, a collection of poems about different kinds of cats. Work on YHS’s version of the musical began last fall. In addition to crafting costumes, the production team held a fundraiser involving the sell-from-home company Jamberry. Products sold included nail polish, gel and wraps. Auditions took place Feb. 15-17. There are 87 cast members, with 29 in the main cast. It will be performed April 14-18, minus that Sunday, at the YHS/Summit Activities Center theatre. “It’s a rushed production this year,” director Amy Miner said. “Normally, we have an extra week to practice, but because of where the one-act play, prom and Easter fell, we don’t even have two full months to rehearse.” However, Miner and her crew are determined to not let that be an issue.
