The winners were announced during the 47th annual South Dakota Pork Congress banquet held on January 13, 2016 in Sioux Falls. “Selected based on performance records, management level and industry activities, not the size or type of their operation, the Andersen family and Justin Rothschadl exemplify South Dakota’s pork producers and the SD Master Pork Producers organization which is comprised of allied industry Council, serves on their Executive Board, and in January was elected as their second Vice President. He has also chosen to go through the national Pork Leadership Institute. Andersen and Gail’s daughter Emily was chosen to be the 2016 SD Pork Producers Youth Ambassador. Andersen is also on the Lincoln Co Planning & Zoning Board, the Centerville School Advisory Board, serves as a Deacon at Komstad Covenant Church, and is a member of the Masonic Lodge. Due to their high standards of performance, their commitment to humanely raise pork in an environmentally sustainable manner, and leadership activities in the SD Pork industry, the Andersen family was selected as one of the two 2015 SD Master Pork Producers. More about Justin Rothschadl While relatively young, Justin Rothschadl has been involved with pork production almost his whole life. As soon as he could, Rothschadl was out in the barns helping his dad, Keith with their farrow-to-finish operation. After graduating high school in 2006, he went to South Dakota State University, but after a year in Brookings, Rothschadl realized different rooms. Two of the rooms hold 500 pigs each and the other three rooms hold 450 pigs, for a one-time capacity of 2350 pigs. Andersen’s wife Gail and their children Tyler, Jacob and Emily are all actively involved in the family’s pork operation. They finish pigs for Brentwood Colony by Faulkton, and utilize Standard Nutrition and Parkston Grain & Feed for their nutritional program. At market weight, the pigs are then sold to Smithfield in Sioux Falls. Due to Andersen and his family’s hard work and dedication, the pigs perform very well. Mortality is less than 2.50 percent and average daily gain and feed efficiency are 1.91 pounds-per-day and 2.72 pounds of feed per pound of gain, respectively, all above industry averages. They also add pit additives to reduce odor and to increase the nutrient value of the manure for their crops. Andersen continues his family’s legacy of leadership in the community and pork industry. His dad, Vernon, was instrumental in establishing the Lincoln County Pork Producers and his mom, Beverly, was President of the SD Porkettes. Andersen has been active in the SD Pork Producers members who have the goals of recognizing outstanding pork producers and promoting pork production in South Dakota,” said Bob Thaler, Professor & SDSU Extension Swine Specialist. More about Craig Andersen Craig Andersen has been involved in pork production as long as he can remember. Growing up, he helped his dad, Vernon, on their farrow-to-finish operation. After graduating from South Dakota State University, Andersen returned to the family farm and raised pigs, cattle and crops. Andersen’s pork operation consists of two doublecurtain finishing barns with deep pits for a total of five Meeting of Local Review Board Mission Hill Township (N) SPRING GUTTER COVER SALE As per South Dakota Codified Law, 10-11-13 Notice is hereby given that the governing body, sitting as a Review Board of Mission Hill Township (N) in the County of Yankton, South Dakota will meet at Vangen Lutheran Church, Mission Hill on Monday, March 21st, 2016 at 7:00PM (being the 3rd Monday in March) for the purpose of reviewing and correcting the assessment of said taxing district. Tired of clogged gutters? 20% OFF Rothschadl’s operation has consistently exhibited excellent performance. Mortality in the nursery and finishing barns are 2.5 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively, both well below industry averages. In the finishing barns, the pigs gain at 2.4 poundsper-day, and have a feed efficiency of 2.65 pounds of feed per pound of gain. Just because some of his barns are older, Rothschadl doesn’t let that be an excuse for poorer performance. He just works especially hard in the older nursery barn making sure his pigs get off to a great start. The selection committee was also impressed by Rothschadl’s desire to continue learning and trying to improve every day. He runs trials in his own barns to see what works best in his specific situation. Due to his excellent production records, great husbandry skills and commitment to improving every day, Rothschadl was recognized as one of the two 2015 SD Master Pork Producers. In 2010, he remodeled his dad’s gestation/farrowing barn into a 1200-head nursery, and began getting weaned pigs and finishing them to market weight. Initially he finished the pigs in a 1200-head finishing barn owned by his partner Scott Schuurmans, and in a 600-head, open-fronted barn on his dad’s place. However, to provide a better environment for his pigs and to improve performance, Rothschadl built a new 1200-head finishing barn in 2014. He buys his weaned pigs from Robert Rasmussen of Hurley and appreciates their quality, as well as getting a lot of good advice from Robert.
