On April 7-10, the MMC Theatre Department will perform “Working,” a musical about the lives of various people in various professions. It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 7-9 and at 2 p.m. April 10. Studs Terkel, a one-time radio host and author, conducted interviews with people from different regions and occupations. He wrote a book on those interviews called “Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do” in 1974. A musical based on the book, in which the characters sing about the challenges of their different jobs, was created in 1977 by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso. MMC theatre director Andy Henrickson saw the musical performed at a theatre festival and decided it would be a good fit for MMC. “I said to the students that if they wanted to be in it, they could,” he said. “There was no pressure of who was going to be cast. There’s a place for everyone in the show, which was one of the reasons I picked it.” He also chose the musical for the material it would offer to the MMC choral program. “I thought it would be a good choice to highlight some of the students’ vocal abilities,” he said, adding Mackenzie Hermanson is former Yankton native Jacob Hermanson’s 13-year-old daughter. She is currently in seventh grade at Waukee Middle School in Waukee, Iowa. Jacob grew up in Yankton and graduated high school with the class of 1999. Mackenzie’s grandparents, Steve and Nancy Hermanson, live in Yankton and are proud of their that the format of the show made it easier to find rehearsal times for the performers. “There are athletes, students who have a heavy course schedule and people who have jobs outside of school who are in it,” Henrickson said. “If they have one song that’s theirs, we can be pretty selectable with our rehearsals.” The musical has an unusual set-up of not having a connecting plotline. All the singers perform their own numbers, as well as a few ensemble pieces. According to Henrickson, there are two connecting threads. “The clock controls so much of our days,” he said. “Everything is driven by the clock and we’re always moving according to it.” The other factor that connects the workers is work itself. The jobs shown range from teacher to waitress to housewife. “People learn about how they see life and what they think of what they do,” Henrickson said. He credits the performers for embodying each type of job. “There are some awesome performances from the folks that have solos, and there’s a few numbers with an ensemble, which gives a sense of community onstage,” he said. “We have upperclassmen and underclassmen, some who are seasoned and some who aren’t. It’s a nice variety of people.” Despite the imaginative setting of people singing about their jobs, Henrickson describes the show as “real.” “These are people telling their sto- ries and singing songs based on real interviews with real people,” he said. Through the years, the musical has undergone updates to fit the modern times. However, the theatre is using the original version. “The updated version has some vulgar language,” he explained. “But we’re still trying to make it relevant for now. We’re not doing a period piece were people are stepping back into the 1970s. All these jobs are timeless.” The show has a variety of music, some of which comes from musician James Taylor. “The songs don’t all sound the same because they come from different people,” Henrickson said. “We’re still trying to make it seem contemporary.” The large cast size offers more opportunities for people to find a character to which they can relate. “People can enjoy the wide variety of music and hear some interesting stories about people and their jobs,” Henrickson said. The show is rated PG-13. An Inspirational Essay granddaughter’s accomplishments. Mackenzie was offered an opportunity to be a part of a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during her school trip to Washington, D.C., over spring break. In order to be selected for this opportunity, she had to write an essay covering the significance of the memorial and why this memorial is important to you (the author). Her essay was selected, as well as three other students, and she was offered the opportunity to lay the wreath at the Tomb. In her essay, she highlighted how the military service of her father and multiple deployments in support of the global war on terrorism has impacted her BULL SALES BULL SALES ARE COMING UP childhood upbringing. She also highlighted the fact that since the Civil War, there has been a Hermanson from her family in every significant U.S. conflict. Mackenzie is extremely devoted to understanding her family history, roots and culture. Any time she has an opportunity to explain her thoughts of the Hermanson family, she will accept the challenge. Mackenzie is not the most outspoken teenager and rather shy at times, but when she has an opportunity to put her words, thoughts and emotions down on paper, she is very passionate about her feelings and thoughts. Her family is very proud of her writing capabilities. The guarding of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has stood the test of time, in which shows the true will of the American spirit. The devotion of the Arlington Sentinels shows their fidelity towards America and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect it. They follow their orders with integrity knowing that they are protecting those who protected the country. I believe these values, and several more, should be held with high regard by the American people. Arlington is a place of great esteem, respect and dignity for a military family. I am honored to be able to attend the wreath ceremony, but being able to participate would be a great honor to both me and my family and an experience I would be able to cherish for the rest of my lifetime. I thank you for taking consideration in my request. I believe this ceremony should be treated with deep reverence and honor; a task I would willingly accept with great pride. • Operation Desert Storm/ Michael Hermanson US ARMY; Operation Enduring Freedom/ Jacob Hermanson USAF; Operation Iraqi Freedom/Jacob Hermanson USAF; Operation Noble Eagle/Jacob Hermanson USAF; Operation Odyssey Dawn/Jacob Hermanson USAF; Operation Inherent Resolve/ Jacob Hermanson USAF. ——— Here is her essay: A soldier’s life is full of respect, honor and integrity, and I should know, because I have been raised with a family that has a long military record dating back to the Civil War. My father served Afghanistan and Iraq, my Grandfather in Vietnam, my Great-Grandfather in World War II, my Great-Grandmother served in the Navy, and many past generations who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms and liberties of the United States. I understand the sacrifices that are made by military families. As a young child, my father was often deployed overseas for long periods of time. While his absence left me feeling empty, the letters he sent filled me with hope of his joyous return.
