August, 9, 2016 • Page 10 shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com From Our Readers Many People Made Fox Run Pro-Am A Success By Kevin Doby, PGA Fox Run Golf Professional Fox Run Golf Course would like to thank the following sponsors of their support of the 2016 Fox Run Pro-Am: Kolberg Pioneer, Hy Vee, Yankton Ag Service, Kaiser Heating & Cooling, Meridian Transport, Moody Motors, Fryn’ Pan Restaurant, John A. Conkling Distributing, Murdo’s Restaurant, MetaBank, Dakota Beverage, Harry A’s Yellow Submarine, Scott Kooistra/Doyle Becker, Sheboygan Sausage, O’Malley’s, Dakota Express, All Season Powersports, and PCs Plus (Todd Cowman). The value of Pro-Am sponsors is often taken for granted. Without the support of our sponsors the Fox Run Pro Am would simply not exist. And without the Pro-Am our community would not benefit from the economic impact of this event. Most of the 175 golfers (amateurs and professionals) that play in our event are from out of town, many of whom spend money on lodging, meals, gas, etc. while playing golf over 3-4 days. As well, most of the professionals in our event remain in Yankton the following week to play in Hillcrest’s Pro-Am. Our sponsors make all this happen, and so we are truly grateful for their support. Golf Course Superintendent Rockie Wampol and his crew once again did an outstanding job of preparing the golf course for the event. Mother Nature’s recent heat wave made Rockie’s job more difficult than it already was, but as usual, he and his crew stepped up to the challenge and had the course in great shape. We constantly heard compliments from amateurs and pros alike. Tom Jeffers practically lived at the course for a week to ensure everything went smoothly. We heard countless compliments on how well-run the Pro-Am was, so his efforts were obviously not in vain. (He also has the best baked beans recipe I have every tried, as the golfers were treated to it this weekend.) I also want to thank Yankton High School Golf Coach, Brett Sime, for his commitment and effort to ensure our pro-am was a success. The logistics involved in an event of this size, played over three days, and with all the various games and competitions built into the event’s format are daunting and often mind-boggling, to say the least. Without Brett’s experience in this area, chaos and confusion would be the order of the day. I am also grateful for the hard work and commitment from the food & beverage staff at Fox Run Golf Course. Amanda Schieffer and the entire Food & Beverage staff did a great job of taking care of the often onrush of golfers, which is an exhausting task over the course of 3-4 days. Hundreds of golfers hit thousands of range balls per day in an event of this size. The outside services personnel once again spent their entire days picking the driving range, cleaning the golf balls, stacking the golf balls into perfect pyramids, and then doing it all over again, and again, and again. … Three-day pro-ams are impossible to host if you don’t have hard-working outside services personnel, and we have just that. Almost last, but definitely not least, a big thank you goes out to our volunteer starters: Jerry Busby and Duane Chladek. They were there every day to ensure everyone teed off on time. They performed their jobs to perfection, in spite of a few unforeseen curveballs they encountered. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Brent Adams and Mike Mitchell. These individuals stepped up, and on short notice provided support critical to the success of our event. I don’t know how to thank them enough. Along those same lines we’re extremely grateful to Chris Peterka/HyVee, Kurt Termansen/Sheboygan Sausage, Jeff May/Kolberg Pioneer, Heath Katherine Linnemanstons BROOKINGS, S.D. - SDSU Extension welcomes Katherine Linnemanstons as the new SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor for Lincoln County. “Katherine is enthusiastic about working with youth, parents and partnering with the community,” said Peter Nielson, SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Development Program Director. In this role, Linnemanstons will provide timely 4-H youth development research-based information, resources, education, leader- ship and support to meet the needs of youth, while building relationships to enhance and carry out the mission of SDSU Extension throughout Lincoln County. More about Katherine Linnemanstons Katherine Linnemanstons was introduced to 4-H while working on the staff of Extension camps in Alabama and Wisconsin. “That was my first experience of working with 4-H and I loved the focus on youth development,” said Linnemanstons, who received degrees in ScienceBusiness and Spanish from Notre Dame. “I taught mostly upper elementary and middle school students about the environment, ecology, herpetology - basically the world around them - I decided I really liked this path.” These experiences encouraged her to return to college, this time she enrolled at the University of Minnesota where she received a master’s in Natural Resource Science and Environmental Management. With a master’s degree in hand, Linnemanstons immediately began looking for a position where she could be involved with 4-H programming. “I love the sense of community and the range of opportunities that can be found within SDSU Extension. I look forward to building connections with the community and getting to know the families and volunteers involved in Lincoln County 4-H.” Katherine can be contacted by e-mail or by calling the Lincoln County office at 605.764.2756. niGrow USED EQUIPMENT Large Inventory at Great Prices! Again on short notice these sponsors went above and beyond with special contributions that were absolutely critical to our event’s success. Thank you all so much! And what would any golf tournament be without the golfers, both amateurs and pros alike. Thank you all so much, particularly the amateur golfers, who took time away from their families and jobs to play in our event. Obviously, without you this Pro Am does not exist. We hope you feel the experience was well worth it. Fox Run Golf Course is a true gem in our community that benefits the entire community in so many ways. Seeing all the hard work from our staff and volunteers, along with the support of our sponsors just reinforces this notion. Thank you everyone for being such an important part of it all. Subsurface Drip Irrigation for Vegetables BROOKINGS, S.D. - SDSU Extension will host a seminar focused on subsurface drip irrigation for large scale vegetable production at 4 p.m. (CST) August 18, 2016 at Rilling Produce in Pierre. “Subsurface drip irrigation is a water efficient method of irrigation that can eliminate surface water evaporation and improve yields,” explained Ruth Beck, SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist. The tour is an opportunity for attendees to see how subsurface drip irrigation can be used for crop production. Crops being produced are tomatoes, sweet corn, melons and zucchini, however, subsurface drip irrigation can also be used for corn, soybean and other crops suited to irrigation. Seminar speakers include: Mark Rilling, Owner/Producer, Rilling Produce, Pierre; Dr. Todd Trooien, SDSU Professor, Natural Resource Engineering, College of Ag & Biosciences; Steve Ludemann, and Ryen Reed, both of Morris Irrigation, Pierre. This project is partially funded through the South Dakota Dept. of Agriculture’s Specialty Crops Block Grant Program with assistance Rilling Produce and SDSU.
