New At The Library
A Great 2017
BY JULIE J. AMSBERRY
Yankton Area Arts
Another year in the
books, and what a year it
was! We started 2016 with
photography classes and
book signings, then continued with woodworking
workshops and partnerships with the library and
the Cramer-Kenyon Heritage Home. We filled our
hall with exhibits ranging
from kids artwork to dress
sculptures. The Master Gardeners helped us beautify
GAR Hall with plants and
flowers on the south side of
the building, and we gained
three new board members!
In 2016 our art gallery saw
hundreds of visitors from
three countries and 25
states!
We have so many things
to be thankful for, including all the amazing artists
and volunteers who helped
with our Tour of Homes and
Crimson Door Holiday Boutique in December. Once
again this year, Yankton
showed up to celebrate and
support
local
and area
artists
during
the Crimson Door.
We will
continue
to have

As 2017 blows in, YAA
is prepping for another
great exhibit year. Starting
off the season, we welcome local makeup artist
Rebecca Swift to the gallery.
Rebecca is making a name
for herself nationally with
her celebrity and character
transformations. She has
transformed her own face
into over 100 celebrities,
including Ellen DeGeneres,
Taylor Swift, Michael Phelps
and the President-Elect,
and characters such as
Hermione Granger, Katniss
Everdeen, Marge Simpson
and Chip, the cup from
AMSBERRY
Beauty and the Beast. Her
talent landed her a spot
last November on the NBC
television show “Caught on
Camera with Nick Cannon.”
Rebecca will also have
photos on display of her
transformations as well as
a few of her paintings and
drawings. Come see this
locally grown talent Jan.
20-Feb. 28. We will hold a
reception where you can
speak with Rebecca on
Friday, Feb. 3, from 5-7 p.m.
at GAR Hall.
Other exhibits this year
include art students from
Sacred Heart Middle School
and Yankton Middle School
during Youth Art Month.
Springfield native Travis
Halsey is a designer known
for costuming major ballet
companies throughout the
country. Jane Stimpson is a
local painter whose artwork
looks extremely lifelike. Jennifer White is a Yankton artist who has opened her own
gallery in Sioux Falls called
Post Pilgrim Gallery. The
Dakota Prairie Quilt Guild
will show off stunning quilts

Call For Artists: Art For SD State
Buildings Proposals
PIERRE — South Dakota artists have until Feb. 24,
2017, to submit purchase proposals for the Art for
State Buildings Program.
The Art for State Buildings program was created
for the purpose of adding the work of talented South
Dakota artists to the state’s permanent art collection
for display in areas of state government buildings
with significant public access. Work purchased will
be installed in public access areas of the Capitol and/
or other state buildings on the Capitol Complex in
Pierre.
Proposals for purchase should be submitted to the
South Dakota Arts Council, the agency charged with
managing the program. South Dakota artists whose
body of work has contributed to the state’s cultural
heritage and development are encouraged to apply.
Proposals will be reviewed by an advisory committee to the South Dakota Arts Council. Selection will be
based on:
• quality of the work
• the artwork’s relevance to South Dakota environment, history, heritage or culture
• experience of the artist
• permanence and safety, as required for public
artworks
For a complete request for proposal, visit www.
artscouncil.sd.gov, call 605-773-3301, email sdac@
state.sd.us or write the South Dakota Arts Council at
711 E. Wells Ave., Pierre, SD 57501.
An office of the South Dakota Department of Tourism, the South Dakota Arts Council’s mission is to
provide grants and services to artists, arts organizations and schools across the state with funding from
the National Endowment for the Arts and the state of
South Dakota.
