shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com The Optimist Club of Vermillion is encouraging area students to contemplate the phrase “Can Society Function Without Respect?” as part of the Optimist International Essay Contest for the 20172018 school year. The Vermillion Optimist Club will judge the local students’ essays, based on the theme of “Can Society Function Without Respect?” and determine the top contestant. The winning Essay contestant will receive a $100 gift card and certificate and the winning essay will be sent to the DMM District level where college scholarships are available for top winners. “Young students today have so many fresh ideas about the world and their future,” Club President Dennis V. Steffen said, “As Optimists, it is our goal to encourage them and do what we can to bring out the best in each of them. This gives them a wonderful opportunity to tap into their creativity and pursue possible scholarships at the same time.” The Vermillion Optimist Club of Vermillion has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest since we were Chartered in July 2016 and has been active in the community since then. Other programs and service projects that the Club is involved in include Youth Appreciation Week, Oratorical Contest, Respect for Law, Robotics, Local 4-H Clubs, TLC Toys @ Parade of Lights, VPD wrap and shop with a Cop, Library Week, support local swim and softball teams to name a few. Students must be 18 and younger by Oct. 1, 2017 and those wishing to participate in the essay contest can find out more about the contest by contacting President Dennis V.
