Friends of the Library groups exist nationwide to support libraries through fundraising activities and encouraging gifts to libraries. At their last Friends meeting, our group gifted us with many nice things: a sensory play station to be available in the children’s section, several summer reading performers for the upcoming summer reading program, the purchase of some large games for use in programming, and most notably, a $1,000 donation to the Yankton Community Library Foundation in support of a new library building. I’m often asked when we’re going to get a new library. While there’s no easy answer to that, what I’ve learned from watching library construction projects in the region — such as the beautiful new library in Aberdeen—is that a new library often comes after a significant fundraising effort by the local library foundation has begun. Our friends at the Alexander Mitchell Public Library Foundation in Aberdeen contributed upwards of $2 million to their project. I’ve also learned that it’s not going to happen overnight. The Aberdeen group started their foundation in 1990. With their gift, our Friends of the Library would like to start the conversation in our community and move down the long road of progress. If you’re interested in the conversation, both the Friends and the Foundation are always looking for new members, new board members, and of course, monetary donations are always welcome. The Yankton Community Library Foundation is a 501(c)3, so donations are tax deductible. Speaking of the Friends of the Library, they’ll be holding their monthly book sale on Saturday, March 3, from 9:30 a.m.-noon in the library garage. It is also renewal time for the group, so if you’re a member, get your renewals in soon! As we move into awards season, we’ll have our Annual Oscars Movie Marathon over two weekends in March. The first will be March 3-4 and we will be showing “Coco,” “The Darkest Hour,” “Roman J. Israel Esq.” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri” and “Dunkirk.” Our second weekend will be March 24-25 and will feature “Ferdinand,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “The Shape of Water,” “The Big Sick” and “Get Out.” More details can be found on our website calendar or by calling the library. We’ll kick off our afterschool activities in March with Dr. Seuss Day on March 1 at 3:45 p.m. with games, activities and arts and crafts. Come ready to have some silly Seuss-style fun! Our afterschool Thursday events will continue at 3:45 p.m. with LEGO Club on March 8, Science Club on March 15, and a showing of Disney’s “Coco” on March 22. We will also continue with open Wii play time on Fridays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Our teen event this month is March 17 at 3 p.m. and our TAB meeting will take place on March 5 at 7 p.m. Teen events are open to all teens in grades 6-12 and our TAB group is accepting applications for new members. If you have little ones, join us for our weekly Story Times on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Tuesdays/Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. As the American Library Association’s “Libraries Transform” campaign reminds us, five out of five doctors agree that reading aloud to children supports brain development so bring those kiddos to us! We also follow each morning session with sensory play, activities that encourage exploration and play and another way to help babies and toddlers build language. Our new preschool and younger activity is called “Stay and Play” and features several sensory stations that kiddos can play and work through with their caregivers. It’s a great way to beat winter cabin fever with all this snow and cold we’ve been having and has been endorsed as “SO fun!” by my nephew who attended last week. This is an especially good program for kids who may be intimidated by the group aspect of Story Time. We’ll also be continuing our Homework Help program from 4-5:15 p.m. in the library meeting room on Monday afternoons. This program is open to high school, elementary and anywhere in between. No reservations are needed. Two of our newer weekend programs that continue to be popular are Kids Art Club and the Classic Movie Series. Kids Art Club will be available all day on March 10. It is a drop-in craft program that takes place the second Saturday of each month; we provide the supplies, you provide the kids! The Classic Movie Series will also NATURAL TASTES BETTER MV Shopper 665-5884 MV Shopper M I S S O U R I VA L L E Y In Print and Online! We will be showing the Hitchcock classic “Rear Window” at 2 p.m. There will be no shortage of movies at the library in March! The Yankton Seed Library will be holding their monthly class on March 13 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and will focus on seed starting. New and returning members welcome! Our Unplug, Unwind, Craft series continues on March 20 at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required and will open on March 1. The class will be limited to 20 participants (our February class was full, so sign up early!). Stitches in the Stacks is back to meeting on the third Thursday of the month in the “Quiet Room” at 6 p.m. If you’re working on a project, stop in for some socialization while you work. No instruction is provided. Lastly, while we got rid of fines on books, those pesky movies still have them, so be sure to bring us your Mac & Cheese March 1-10 to clear out those fines. We’ll happily accept donations from people who don’t have fines as well. All donations go to the Contact Center. The best way to follow along with all of our library happenings is to follow us on Facebook by searching Yankton Community Library or check out our events calendar on our website at http://library. cityofyankton.org. You’re also always welcome to call or email us with questions at library@cityofyankton.org or 605-6685275. We look forward to seeing you! $ Packs Cartons Packs Cartons Cartons 210 W.
