The day is meant to remind heritage organizations to be prepared for a disaster and to take the initiative to plan some activities that may help their organizations in the event of an emergency. If an organization needs assistance with preparing an emergency preparedness plan they are encouraged to contact the State Historical Society-Archives at 605-773-3804 or archref@state.sd.us. “Preparing an emergency preparedness plan or training staff to respond to different scenarios may seem daunting, but dedicating a little time on May 1 may make a difference if an emergency does happen,” said Chelle (pronounced SHELL-ee) Somsen, South Dakota state archivist. “Examples VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota Department of Transportation has closed the Interstate 29 Homestead rest area near Vermillion Exit 26 for the reconstruction of the rest area and welcome center. Officials expect the new rest area and welcome center to open by April 2019. JLG Architects is the designer and Beckenhauer Construction, Inc. is the prime contractor on this $3.7 million rest area reconstruction project. State Historical Society staff are updating the emergency preparedness plan to correct any outdated information. “These are actions that we can take without the whole process becoming overwhelming,” Somsen said. Daugaard Touts Early Results Of New Grants For Grads Housing Program PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard today released early results of the recently launched South Dakota Housing Development Authority Grants for Grads program, which aims to assist recent graduates in purchasing their first home in South Dakota. In the first three months of the program’s existence, 97 new homeowners have taken advantage of the program, a result that the Governor has touted as highly encouraging. “We’re thrilled with the initial response and look forward to more recent graduates choosing to stay in the state or move here with this program,” Gov. Daugaard said. “There are so many reasons to settle down in South Dakota, and receiving support for your dream homebuying experience is just one of the many.” The “Grants for Grads” program launched at the beginning of 2018 and is open to first-time homebuyers who: •Meet certain income requirements •Are purchasing a primary residence in South Dakota •Have not owned a home in the past three years •Select a home with a purchase price of $250,200 or less •Have earned an accredited associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree within the past 60 months. Grants for Grads is available for a limited time through participating lenders, with per-beneficiary assistance at five percent of the loan amount.
