By Rachel Wood A picture is worth a thousand words, right? In a world full of apps like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, we sometimes take for granted how accessible photos, video and audio are to us. For newspapers and magazines, that isn’t always the case. You can’t exactly click on a photo on the front page of your daily paper and watch it come to life in a swirl of colors and sounds…but with the new Yankton Interactive App made available by the Press and Dakotan and the Missouri Valley Shopper, you can now do just that! Relive those last thirty seconds of the winning touchdown from last night’s Homecoming game, or listen to a clip of that band you love that’s coming to town for Riverboat Days- all by placing your phone over an image in the paper and watching it burst into real, moving clips of the action! “It really is state of the art technology in a community newspaper format that allows us to deliver content in a much more unique and interactive way,” Gary Wood, publisher of the Press and Dakotan says. “It’ll bring the story to life at your fingertips- it’s not virtual reality- it’s augmented reality, which in a way is even better because you don’t need special accessories to make it possible, all you need is your phone and the paper.” “It’s power lies in the ability to overlay digital imagery on a person’s view of the real world by simply using your smart phone,” explains John Wright, chief executive officer of Strata, a Utah based developer of some of the first augmented reality platforms; and the exclusive development partner for Yankton Interactive. Mr. Wright reveals that “it turns the newspaper into a portal for accessing limitless opportunities in your local community and beyond.” Augmented reality is perhaps best known for its application in the wildly popular Pokemon Go game, but the technology is rapidly gaining steam in mainstream business applications as well, and some analysts predict it will drive a $20 billion market by 2020. Nissan recently launched an AR experience that lets shoppers view cars through a device that delivers guided tours of automobile features by Star Wars characters. However, with that application, customers must visit a showroom. With Yankton Interactive, users can enjoy the AR experience while eating breakfast and reading the paper at their own kitchen table. The Press and Dakotan is one of the first to use AR to enhance a newspaper and hopes that the technology will spread to others in the industry. This also presents advertisers with an opportunity to promote and sell their products or services in a way that is more personable and innovative, by enhancing ads through providing video, audio and other features to inform and interest customers. “We believe newspapers are the lifeblood of their community, a media that holds them together as no other can do. We also know that many are struggling to remain solvent and relevant in the digital world,” says Wood, “we believe the AR experience will help the paper gain readers and advertisers, and we intend to make this technology accessible to them on a wide scale.” Download the free Yankton Interactive App today to experience all the adventures waiting for you in the paper!
