A rain garden is a shallow, landscaped depression that temporarily holds water runoff from impervious surfaces, such as rooftops, driveways and parking lots. The water held in a rain garden slowly infiltrates into the soil profile, while at the same time removes pollutants. "Rain gardens are typically used as urban stormwater best management practices to reduce rainfall runoff that would otherwise be collected in a stormwater system," said John McMaine, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Water Management Engineer. McMaine further explained, that depending on what plants are selected, rain gardens can also be used for pollinator habitat and shelter. The garden featured on this tour was constructed by SDSU Extension staff and Dakota Rural Action volunteers following a series of rain garden design workshops hosted by SDSU Extension and Dakota Rural Action this spring in Brookings, Sioux Falls and Watertown. During the post-construction tour, attendees will receive a brief overview of the design process, construction steps and lessons learned. "We will also discuss long-term vision for the rain garden and how it will help answer questions about rain garden effectiveness for South Dakota," McMaine said. The project received partial funding through an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 319 Information and Education mini-grant. There is no cost to attend this workshop, but preregistration is appreciated. To pre-register or for more information, contact McMaine by email. 7 7 2 Sudoku #7 8 9 7 3 5 4 3 9 2 6 1 7 1 8 9 6 3 7 2 4 6 5 4 1 4 2 8 5 9 3 5 8 7 1 6 2 6 1 6 4 9 5 8 3 6 5 1 6 2 4 8 3 5 8 9 2 7 5 7 91 26 22 51 5 1 9 4 4 6 8 9 7 5 6 4 6 3 3 8 5 7 2 4 1 9 5 9 4 2 2 3 3 4 8 7 5 1 5 6 3 4 8 7 9 5 6 4 2 3 9 7 6 3 7 1 9 9 8 4 6 2 Yankton interactive 8 7 1 1 3 7 7 1 7 9 7 1 2 4 6 9 4 8 5 3 6 8 5 3 4 3 Sudoku #8 3 556 8 7 9 2 ea BOOK 66 8 1 #5 2 1 1 8 5 4 8 9 7 4 2 7 9 3 6 3 18-ACAI-13078 3 8 6 5 6 2 9 1 8 9 7 2 2 3 1 4 1 5 8 6 5 4 2 8 3 1 5 7 7 6 3 9 4 4 5 2 FROM THE BAND THAT BROUGHT YOU © 2008 KrazyDad.com 9 8 3 7 1 2 5 8 6 4 6 2 3 9 © 2008 KrazyDad.com TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH KRAZYDAD.COM/PUZZLES COMES Worship Night IN YANKTON YHS THEATRE – FREE ADMISSION SEPTEMBER 19TH AT 6:30PM THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS:
