You know, regular tooth check, cleaning, whatever Perry says to do, I do. Quicker that way. But this particular dentist isn’t nearly as feared as others. He’s … entertaining. Dr. Perry O’Dontal worked his way through tooth school by acting, and you might be able to take the dentist off the stage, but you can’t take the spirit of the Bard of Avon out of the dentist. “Ahhh,” he said, coming into my cubicle and shaking my hand, “fang fixing time again, brave lads and lasses. Lay bare the pearly whites of legend and let’s have a look.” I opened my mouth. He poked around in there with that little poker stick. “From the depths of hell, my lad,” he said, “it ‘pears there be a cavity, like as not the size of the caverns of the three-headed dog, Cerberus! Mayhaps we shall remove it’s evil from our presence.” So here came the grinder. “Eat away! Eat away the edges of evil! If thy cavity offends thee, fill it up!” So he ground and filled and xrayed and then bowed. I thanked him and he replied, “I am but your humble servant, milord, awaiting your bidding with drill and pick, carving out a masterpiece of a smile to bring sunshine into all those around you.” Yep. Entertaining. I almost want to go to a Shakespeare play. Almost. Jazz Group To Perform At Yankton Church Sioux Falls-based jazz musicians performing as the JAS Quintet, exploring the many sounds of jazz legend Miles Davis, will present a concert in the Sanctuary of Yankton’s Christ Episcopal Church located at 517 Douglas Avenue on Saturday, March 30. Showtime is 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. Davis was one of the most influential and popular jazz musicians of our time, and during this informative evening, the JAS Quintet will feature compositions from Davis’s quintets and septets and their music from 1954 through the early 1970s. Musicians include Jim Spiers (trumpet), Joel Shotwell (saxophones), CJ Kocher (saxophones), Andrew Reinartz (bass), Jeff Paul (keyboards), and Daniel Heier (drums). This show is co-hosted by Yankton Area Arts and “Events at the AME.” Tickets can be purchased at the GAR Hall (508 Douglas), from YAA Board Members, or Michael Schumacher. Women’s Suffrage In SD To Be Discussed In honor of Women’s History month, the Yankton Community Library will host speaker Molly Rozum on Sunday, March 31, at 2 p.m. Rozum will present about South Dakota Woman Suffrage in “Votes for Women: 100 Years of Woman Suffrage in South Dakota.” Rozum will focus on the failed 1890 and successful 1918 campaigns for women’s suffrage. She will discuss the roles of many men and women who helped with the movement, both nationally and in South Dakota. Rozum teaches both graduate and undergraduate history classes at the University of South Dakota. She is the author and editor of several books and articles about history and woman’s suffrage. She grew up in Mitchell. This program was made possible by the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. ‘Cook The Book’ At Vermillion Library It’s A ‘Beautiful Day’ To Celebrate Joy Of Mr. Rogers goes down the drain, and find out why you won’t. And you’ll learn that words are important but “There are many ways to say ‘I love you.’” While you’re reading “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” there’s one discrepancy you may notice: these poems are supposed to be lyrics to songs. Millions of children knew author Fred Rogers as a friend and an inspiration, and for those who faithfully watched his TV shows or loved his albums, that won’t be an issue here: these words will be as familiar as the A-B-C Song. That’s the literary version of comfort food for a kid of any age, including a parental former-kid who’s sharing. So will the lack of music even matter? Probably not. Rogers’ compassion and love for children pulses through this book, in words that comfort and teach. There are lyrics here for boosting self-confidence, for learning to control emotions, for friendship, bad times, and silliness. Those who never saw his original episodes will get the message despite lack of music because, as you may remember, Rogers was irresistible for a small kid. If yours needs what these poems say, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” will make everybody happy. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: The Poetry of Mister Rogers,” lyrics by Fred Rogers, illustrations by Luke Flowers; © 2019, Quirk Books; 143 pages ——— BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER What kinds of things make you happy? Hugs and kisses might be your answer. Puppets and giraffes, maybe. Sunshine, friends, and a day on your bike. These are things you’ll find in another something that should make you happy: “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: The Poetry of Mister Rogers,” lyrics by Fred Rogers, illustrations by Luke Flowers. So what are you doing today? If you say “yes” to Mr. Rogers’ invitation, then you might meet tigers or learn how to make a pretend telephone. You could spend the day with a king or just spend it “being here.” As Mr. Rogers said, you’re “going to like today.” In this book, you’ll meet new friends and have new experiences. You’ll be introduced to a boy walking his giraffe. You can be an elephant, or be invited to imagine what your parents were like when they were little. “When a baby comes,” you’ll see that it’s going to be just fine. Learning to deal with your emotions is important and Mr. Rogers has a poem for you here about being mad, which is okay. Read another one about being hurt, and how it’s normal to cry. He says it’s “good to talk” about what you like and what you don’t, and you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for somewhere to call your own. You also shouldn’t allow people to laugh at you. Take your time when learning something new, try to be your best, and even if you might struggle with that, always remember that someone likes you just as you are. Here, you’ll learn about fences and why people might have them. Find out why it’s fun to imagine being someone grown-up; and how a wish you made when you were mad won’t make something come true. You’ll see what happens when water Looking for the best deal in town? Check the Public Meeting On Future Of Westside Park Land April 1 Museum Land To Be Discussed The City of Yankton invites the public to the upcoming community meeting that will start a planning process for future improvements to Westside Park. The meeting is at 7 p.m. Monday, April 1, in the Community Room at CMTEA Building (RTEC), 1200 W. 21st Street, Yankton. The Dakota Territorial Museum will be relocating the buildings found in the northwest area of Westside Park in the near future and that area will turn into park green space in the short term. Mount Marty College has been gifted the former track and athletic field that is adjacent to Westside Park and plans to utilize the space for its students’ use. Some amenities found in the park need to be replaced as they have come to the end of their expected useful life. With these changes and the upcoming need to replace amenities, comes an opportunity to meet with neighbors of the park and other citizens in the community to embark on a planning process for future improvements. The next step in the planning process is a community-wide public meeting scheduled to gather more input on the park and engage with the community to determine what future improvements to the park could entail. It is important for the City to gather as much input as possible to create the most desired master plan possible for Westside Park. The public that utilizes the park should provide input so the City gains an understanding of how the public uses the park and what future uses are envisioned. During the planning process is the time for the community to imagine the poten319 Walnut St. tial amenities, programming and uses of Yankton, SD 57078 such a highly visible park. 605-665-5884 If anyone has questions regarding the meeting or cannot attend but would like to provide input, March 1 contact the thru March 30 Parks and Hand Woven Rugs Recreation Department -- Excludes sale and special orders at 605-66844”/45” Flannel 5231.
