 Damien Magnuson-Willman

 Magnuson-Willman
 Is Making Memories
 In Music At YMS

 On Feb. 1-2, Yankton
 Middle School student
 Damien Magnuson-Willman
 participated in the second
annual South Dakota Middle School All State Jazz
 Band. Thirty-three students
 from across the state were
 selected for this two-day
 event.
 Rehearsals started
 on Friday as students
 were able to work with
 renowned jazz instructors
 Ryan Stahle, director of
 bands at Mitchell School
 District, and Joel Shotwell,
 regional jazz performer and
educator. Small workshopstyle classes also provided
students with a great opportunity to listen to jazz
 techniques as they were
 performed by regional
 Jazz artists. Rehearsals
 resumed Saturday morning
and concluded in the afternoon with a 3 p.m. concert
 at Mitchell Performing Arts
 Center.
 Damien is the first
 student of Yankton Middle
 School to be selected for
 this prestigious event for
the second year in a row.
 On Friday, March 1, and
 Saturday, March 2, Damien
 participated in the 20th
 Anniversary Middle School
 All State Band in Huron,
joining more than 200 musicians for the weekend-long
 event.
Middle school students are selected for
 this prestigious event by
 submitting audition CDs
 the first part of December.
 Each student’s audition
 consists of at least three
 scales and two musical

 selections that display
 the student’s musical tone
 and technical ability. All
 recorded auditions are
 listened to and adjudicated
 by South Dakota music
 educators. Students were
 selected based on their
 final scores from more than
 500 submitted auditions.
 From the qualifying final
scores, two band ensembles are formed. Students
 worked with South Dakota
 State University’s Dr. Jacob
Wallace, as well as composer and conductor, Tyler
 S. Grant this year. Grant
 was commissioned a work
 special for our celebration
 this year!
 This is the third year
 Damien has been selected
 for this honorable event.
He was one of only 18
students recognized during the concert for their
 accomplishment this year.
 A 3 p.m. concert was held
 Saturday at Huron High
 School.
 Mrs. Wenisch, YMS Band
 Director, stated “Damien
is a great student to work
 with. He’s very focused on
where he wants life to take
him and is not afraid to let
music be an active part of
 his life. His commitment to
 the music program and his
 musical ability are top of
the line and I am privileged
to have him in the YMS
 band program.”
 Wenisch accompanied
 Damien to both musical
 events, where students
 were given opportunities
 to have an entertaining
 experience while growing
 as a musician.

It has been an exciting week at the Mead Cultural Education Center (MCEC) as we added new elements to
our “Journeying Forward” exhibit thanks to a Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation grant. We are adding
interactive, hands-on elements for the young and old to enjoy — including new donations from the Larry Ness
American Indian Collection are also being installed. Adding these new elements and historic objects only add
to the wonderful exhibit that opened in December 2018. We invite everyone to the MCEC on Sunday, April
28, for the dedication ceremony of the “Journeying Forward” exhibit and these new features. We will have a
nationally-recognized expert on Thomas Jefferson — Clay Jenkinson from North Dakota. We will also have fun
activities to do and reenactors to converse with. Visit our website for more information on the event. Before
then, be sure to visit at noon Friday, April 5, for our monthly Feed Your Mind Program. Former administrator
Steve Lindquist will be here to talk about the history of the state hospital, which celebrates a 140th anniversary
this year. For more on upcoming events you can check out our calendar of events at www.meadbuilding.org.
You can stop out at the Mead Cultural Education Center at 82 Mickelson Drive, email us at info@meadbuilding.org. Our winter hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (closed Wednesdays) and Saturday and Sunday
 1-5 p.m. Office hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
