A Safe Place to Live, Grow, Work, and Play Yankton County offers an abundance of opportunities not only for those of us who live and work here, but for the many thousands of visitors that come every year. Each year sees continued growth in Yankton County in agriculture, manufacturing, housing and infrastructure. All of these greatly benefit our residents and visitors alike. These things also call for some changes in the Yankton County Sheriff’s office, Jim Vlahakis changes that have been Yankton County Sheriff happening since 1862. Prior to 1862, law enforcement in the Dakota Territory was provided by an appointed U.S. Marshall, his deputies and U.S. Cavalry Troops. Then in 1862 the Session Laws of the Dakota Territorial Legislature, Chapter 23, established a number of county offices including that of County Sheriff. Some of the Sheriff’s duties have changed over the years but many are the same today. Sheriffs were responsible for keeping the peace in the county and maintaining the jail. They could appoint deputies as well. In South Dakota, Sheriffs are the only law enforcement officers that have always been elected by the people and this has always been the case in Yankton County. Over the years in South Dakota the length of the terms Sheriffs can be in office have changed from two years to what they are today, four year terms with an unlimited number of successive terms. In Yankton County I consider it a great privilege to lead the professional and dedicated group of men and women in the Sheriff’s office and I am honored to serve the residents of Yankton County, a county that continues to be a safe place to live, grow, work and play.
