MMC Visits ‘The Addams Family’ This Halloween BY REILLY BIEL P&D Correspondent They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, and this Halloween, they’re going to be singing and dancing onstage in Mount Marty College’s (MMC) Marian Auditorium. “The Addams Family,” which will run from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3, features the famous characters — including Wednesday, Gomez, Morticia and Cousin Itt — in a comedy-musical that shows the bonds of family when Wednesday invites her normal boyfriend and his very normal parents to the Addams manor at the same time the Addams ancestors are brought back from the dead for their annual reunion. The play — as well as the 1960s television show and several movies, one of which is in theaters now — is based on the macabre but beloved characters created by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938. This musical debuted on Broadway in 2010. Director Andy Henrickson said he was drawn to select this show for MMC’s 2019-2020 theatre season through positive word-of-mouth and the opportunities for male performers. “We knew we had some new male talent coming to Mount Marty (this fall), so we decided to give it a shot,” he said. One aspect he didn’t factor into his decision was the size of the production. In addition to the 25-person cast, the show calls for impressive set pieces, some of which need to be moved into place in a matter of seconds. According to Henrickson, the stage crew is handling the work well. “We have a 16-foot gate that rolls, a 25-foot wide wall that flies in, two tall staircases on either side of the stage and a 17-foot long banquet table, among other things,” he said. “In last year’s production of ‘Nine to Five,’ the actors were rolling on little desks, which seems really easy in comparison (to this).” The show is also unique in its costume design — done almost entirely in whites, grays and blacks — that matches the Addams’ classic look. The production even took the extra step of renting Gomez Addams’ costume from Einstein’s Costumes & Prop Rental in Mitchell. “Good thing we got it before the Halloween season,” Henrickson remarked. Despite the drab clothing and dreary setting, the musical keeps things upbeat, with the famous “snap-snap” from the Addams theme song incorporated throughout. Henrickson noted that he was surprised by the touching direction the show goes in as it progresses. “There’s a period in the second act where Gomez realizes he’s going to lose MV Shopper M I S S O U R I VA L L E Y CLASSIFIEDS IN PRINT & ONLINE To place your ad call... 605.665.5884 Let Our Family Business Keep Yours In The Go With: eA Tak D ort Sh the Missouri Valley Shopper In print and online! www.missourivalleyshopper.com Hartington Tree LLC TREE TRIMMING, REMOVALS & TRANSPLANTING TREES FOR SALE EVERGREEN • SHADE • ORNAMENTAL • Farm Filters • Hydraulic Hoses • Bearings & Seals Cox Auto his daughter to her boyfriend, and as a father whose daughters have been married off, that’s a tough thing,” he said. In fact, the theme of family is not just prevalent in the show’s plot, but in the cast. Henrickson’s own daughter, Maddie (Alice Beineke) stars; along with siblings Joey (Ancestor), James (Lurch), Josh (Lucas Beineke) and Elizabeth (Ancestor) Stibral; Quinn and Seth Fargo and Natalie Nayokpuk (Ancestors); husband and wife Alan (Ancestor) and Dawn Ferris (Costume/Makeup Design and Supervisor); as well as Kathryn Reimler (Choreographer) and her daughter, Margaret (Cousin Itt). “Having five families represented in the play is a cool touch,” Henrickson said. Due to the show opening on Halloween night, people are encouraged to come in costume if they wish, and there will be a drawing for a prize during the evening. Henrickson enjoys working on a show that matches the fun atmosphere of the season. “For all the dead people we have (in the show), it has a ton of life,” he said. “The Addams Family” will be performed Thursday, Oct. 31-Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. in MMC’s Marian Auditorium.
