Last year, Sharon BY CORA VAN OLSON cora.vanolson@yankton.net Two Yankton residents were disappointed not to hear their names called during the honorable mentions in the Dakota MasterWorks awards ceremony last month, but their moods brightened when they were both announced place winners. Sharon Koller and Paul Harens received second and third place, respectively, for their photography entries in the 23rd annual South Dakota Health Care Association (SDHCA) Dakota MasterWorks art show and competition. Koller’s winning entry of an eagle taking off from a tree was titled “Leaving the Branch,” while Harens won for his landscape photograph of a trail shrouded with trees titled, “Garden Mystery Trail.” The Dakota MasterWorks contest is aimed specifically at individuals age 60 and older and allows several different types of media entries, including: oil, acrylic, watercolor, drawing/pastels/scratchboard, photography, mixed media and wood carving. Winners fall into two categories: Experienced, age 60–79, and Masters, age 80 and older. Harens and Koller placed in the experienced group. This year’s show included more than 130 entries, making it one of the largest competitions ever. Both artists have competed in this event before, receiving honorable ‘13 FORD EDGE LIMITED AWD Moody Price STK A03452 $ 12,995 ‘16 FORD ESCAPE SE AWD Black, Leather Moody Price STK B47850 $ 18,995 ‘16 FORD EDGE SPORT AWD Loaded, Red Moody Price STK C11478 $ 28,995 ‘17 FORD ESCAPE SE AWD Tan, 27,000 Miles Moody Price STK D26955 $ 19,995 ‘16 FORD ESCAPE SE AWD ‘18 FORD EDGE TITANIUM AWD 21,000 Miles, Blue Moody Price STK C59654 $ 18,995 ‘18 FORD F-150 CREW CAB XLT 3.5L EcoBoost, Nav, Moonroof Moody Price STK D96072 $ 36,995 Moody Price STK C15542 $ 27,995 ‘16 FORD F-150 CREW CAB LARIAT Sport, Black, 29K Moody Price STK D75851 $ 39,995 Road House. “I went out there to get a picture of the railroad bridge in the fog,” he said. “I turned around to go back to the car — instead of going on the highway, I walked up the trail — and I turned around, and there was the picture.” Harens, who had his first solo photography show, titled “The Eye of the Beholder” at Mount Marty College earlier this year, plans to submit his winning photo, and perhaps others, to another competition later this month. “I just got an email about a new national-international contest,” he said. “I am going to try to enter a couple for that.” Koller, who entered this photo in the Yankton Area Arts’ Mighty Mo’ Photo show competition in August and sold it, said she has no plans at this time to put “Leaving the Branch” in any other shows. “I’m sure there are other shows, but I have no interest in that,” Koller said. “I really do my photography for my own enjoyment.” ——— First place for experienced photography went to Dan Ripperger of Watertown for “Grandpa’s Stuff.” First, Second, Third, Best of Show and People’s Choice will be on exhibit at the Ramkota Hotel in Pierre during the SDHCA Legislative Reception on Jan. 28, 2020.
