During his 37-year ownership from 1973 to his death, the longest in club history, the Yankees earned 7 World Series titles and 11 pennants. He died after suffering a heart attack in his Tampa home. BP robots attached a new, tighter-fitting cap on top of the gushing Gulf of Mexico oil leak Monday, raising hopes that the crude could be kept from polluting the water for the first time in nearly three months. Placing the cap on top of the leak is just a temporary fix, but the oil giant’s best hope for containing the spill. July 21 After approximately 13 years with the Yankton County Extension Office, Sharon Guthmiller is taking on a job in Pennington County. A short going-away party occurred during Tuesday’s commission meeting. July 24 The Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel will be celebrating 60 years since its completion. The chapel is the primary worship space for the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery. Little has changed since the completion of the chapel. The chapel’s history actually dates back to the late 1800’s when Bishop Martin Marty traveled to the Dakota Territory, becoming the first bishop of the area. In 1919 the first Bishop Marty Chapel was built; 31 years later Mother Jerome Schmitt, the prioress of the monastery, led construction on the new chapel. July 27 A small South Dakota town is being recognized for a big find after last weekend’s storms. High winds, heavy rains and even a possible tornado rolled through the town of Vivian, SD. But now, days later, a hailstone shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com picked up just moments after the storm is getting worldwide attention. A nearly two pound hailstone that was two inches in diameter fell, setting a U. S. record. August August 6 The Senate voted 63-37 for Elena Kagan, who will be sworn in this weekend to succeed retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. She becomes the 112th justice and the fourth woman in the court’s history. August 9 Last night a powerful storm ripped through the Cottonwood Park area west of Yankton. Some campers were overturned, trees were uprooted and the ticket station was destroyed. Some minor injuries were reported. The storm produced winds in excess of 70 miles per hour and dumped more than 2 inches of rain. August 11 Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota was hospitalized in Sioux Falls after having his gallbladder removed yesterday. Johnson, 63, was admitted to McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls with a high fever, but tests determined that it was his gallbladder. Former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens died in a plane that crashed into a remote Alaska mountainside, killing him and four others. Survivors were stranded on the mountainside overnight until rescue crews could reach him. Other passengers included former NASA Chief Sean O’Keefe and three teenagers. Stevens was the longest serving GOP Senator in history. August 12 Yankton will be hosting the Special Olympics State Basketball Tourney for the next three years. The first tournament will be held on March 1112, 2011 at Yankton’s Summit Activities Center. August 19 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that releases from Fort Randall Dam and Gavins Point Dam will be gradually increased over the next two weeks. At the peak, more than 9 million acre feet of flood water was stored in the reservoir system, requiring evacuation prior to next year's runoff season. Gavins Point releases will be increased from 40,000 to 42,000 cubic feet per second, then gradually increased to 47,500 cfs over the next two weeks. August 25 The Yankton School District held an open house and ribbon cutting for the new administration building, bus barn and shop. This project has been in the works for more than 20 years. The new facility is located along West City Limits Road. September September 16 Powers Schurrer and Michaela Wuestewald were crowned the 2010 Pioneer Days prince and princess during Yankton High School homecoming coronation ceremonies Thursday night at the Summit Activities Center Gymnasium. Other royalty were Sophie Holtzmann, Zach Nolz, Whitney Duarte, Austin Anderson, Jessica Nelson, Aaric Willard, Amy Johnson and Joseph Boudreau. A Yankton firm became the official hot dog for the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota. American Foods Group LLC-Sheboygan Sausage Company, which is located in Yankton, makes the hot dogs and brats in South Dakota. September 20 The National Field Archery Association headquarters hosted more than 200 children for the first annual Ted Nugent Kamp for Kids. The children ages 8 to 16 were educated about archery, air rifles, trap shooting, fishing, game calling, sling shots and geo-caching. The Easton Sports Development Foundation Center for Archery Excellence is trying to get Yankton recognized as a Community Olympic Development Program by the United States Olympic Committee.
