She brought the winning ticket containing the numbers 1, 20, 21, 29 and 38, as well as the Hot Ball of 4 to the Sioux Falls Lottery office. She won $10.02 million. Broders said she almost didn’t purchase a ticket for the May 26 Hot Lotto because she was in a hurry to get to her job on the night shift at Vishay Dale Electronics. Ultimately, she did stop at the Casey’s General Store located at Eighth and Burleigh in Yankton. The next morning, as she was reading the newspaper at home, Broders discovered she had the winning ticket. June 8 A large crowd gathered at the new fire station, located at 201 West 23rd Street, for the dedication ceremony and an open house held last night. The facility was occupied in February, but it was only recently that landscaping work was completed. “It feels great to get the citizens in so they can look at the building,” Fire Chief Tom Kurtenbach said. He added that it really is like a second home for firefighters. While the downtown station will remain operational, the new station is where the department’s training and meeting facilities are located. President Obama today named 103 mathematics and science teachers as recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Among them was Yankton High School's Dr. Angela Hejl. The educators will receive their awards in Washington, D.C. later this year. “The selection of Dr. Hejl recognizes her extraordinary dedication and passion that she has for her students,” said Yankton High School Principal Dr. Wayne Kindle. June 14 An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked southern California last night. It disrupted the San Diego Padres baseball game. There was no significant damage or injuries reported. June 16 Brian Paulsen was sworn in earlier this week as Yankton’s Chief of Police. Paulsen comes from the Plattsmouth, Nebraska police department where he leaves behind a 26-year career. He has been chief for the last 10 years in Plattsmouth. Paulsen and his wife Jody have three children. Paulsen officially began his duties in June. June 18 Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, Vermillion and graduated from Vermillion High School but has lived in Yankton since 1989. The Los Angeles Lakers won their 16th NBA title last night. It took 7 games for the Lakers to win over the Boston Celtics. This was Kobe Bryant’s fifth title with the Lakers and the Lakers second title in a row since the 20002002 back-to-back titles. June 22 The U.S. Air Force has selected the Air Force Base in Rapid City as home to one of the new squadrons that operate unmanned aerial vehicles used in patrols over Iraq and Afghanistan. Although speculation has been rampant in media reports that an intruder in a Yankton home last week was a fugitive from the law who has gained notoriety on the West Coast, police have been unable to confirm those suspicions. After teletyping facts about a case unfolding in Yankton last week to other law enforcement agencies, Yankton’s assistant police chief, Jerry Hisek, said his department began receiving calls from other authorities warning that it could be a 19year-old man named Colton Harris-Moore. He is also known as the “Barefoot Bandit” because he allegedly leaves his bare footprints at the scenes of his crimes. According to the Seattle Times, Harris-Moore has been on the run from authorities since April 2008 when he escaped from a Renton, Wash., halfway house. June 23 President Barack Obama rebuked his Afghanistan war commander for “poor judgment” yesterday and considered whether to fire him. Gen. Stanley McChrystal is prepared to submit his resignation at a meeting with Obama today at the White House, two military officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Obama summoned McChrystal to explain disparaging comments about his commander in chief and Obama’s top aides. The meeting was a last-ditch moment for the general once considered the war’s brightest hope. The Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the Ag Gala last night at the Riverfront Event Center. During the ceremonies, the 2010 “Promoting Agricultural Youth” (P.A.Y.) scholarship was presented to Ryan Guthmiller by the Yankton Area Chamber agribusiness division. “Ryan will be attending South Dakota State University where he will be majoring in animal science,” said Justin Wagner, agri-business chairperson. Assistant Police Chief Jerry Hisek said a report was received Friday from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation stating that fingerprints found in a V Yankton home match those of 19-year-old Colton HarrisMoore, also known as the “Barefoot Bandit.” “We have three fingerprints that are positive for Harris-Moore,” he said. Investigators expect to send a request for charges to the Yankton County State’s Attorney Office next week, according to Hisek. At the minimum, he said first- or second-degree burglary charges would be requested. Other charges could include attempted burglary and aggravated assault.
