Three Statewide Organizations Donate to
the State Fair Nordby Exhibit Hall
HURON, S.D.-Three statewide
organizations have made an investment
in the future of South Dakota 4-H. South
Dakota State University’s (SDSU) College
of Agriculture and Biological Sciences,
the SD 4-H Foundation and the state 4-H
Leaders Association have joined forces
to provide a total of $40,000 toward the
Nordby Exhibit Hall for 4-H, Youth, and
Community on the State Fairgrounds in
Huron, S.D.
Gifts were made to the South Dakota
State Fair Foundation’s Capital Campaign
Saturday, April 11, at the state 4-H
Leaders Conference in Mitchell. The SD
4-H Foundation donated $25,000; SDSU’s
College of Ag and Biological Sciences
donated $10,000; and the SD 4-H Leaders
Association donated $5,000.
With their donations, these
organizations are sponsoring the South
Dakota flag, State Fair flag, 4-H flag and
day sponsor flag at the State Fairgrounds.
A few months ago, Jerry and Sandra
Mencke of Huron kicked off the flag
pole naming program by selecting the
American flag.
Loren Noess of Central Electric
Cooperative, and chairperson of the
Capital Campaign said, “I was overjoyed
to see these three groups step up to
support the exhibit hall where so many
4-H members will learn life and leadership
skills for decades to come. We are very
grateful to SDSU, the 4-H Foundation and
the 4-H Leaders Association.”
Dr. Barry Dunn, dean of the SDSU
College of Agriculture and Biological
Sciences said, “The 4-H program is
growing in South Dakota! This new home
for 4-H’ers will help propel the program to
new heights. We are proud to be among
those to invest in the future of our state’s
youth.”
SDSU’s College of Agriculture and
Biological Sciences administers SDSU
Extension, which employs 4-H advisors
to carry out local 4-H programming
throughout the state.
When built, the 48,000 square-foot
Nordby Exhibit Hall for 4-H, Youth and
Community will feature more than 30,000
square feet of exhibit space, multiple
classrooms, a large kitchen for 4-H Special
Foods competitions and a performance
stage for the many 4-H activities that will
take place there year-round.
4-H is the largest youth development
organization in the nation. Through
hands-on experience, 4-H members learn
elements of responsibility, community
service, teamwork, organization,
project management, public speaking,
parliamentary procedure, judging, animal
stewardship, fundraising, mentoring
younger children and a number of other
specific skills. 4-H has prepared many
South Dakotans to meet challenges in
their communities.
To date, the South Dakota State Fair
Foundation has raised $3.83 million of
its $4.7 million goal. Those interested
in supporting the Capital Campaign
are invited to contact the State Fair
Foundation at 605-274-3370 or visit www.

Agriculture is South Dakota’s No. 1
industry, generating over $25.6 billion in
annual economic activity and employing
more than 115,000 South Dakotans. The
South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s

and improve this industry for today
and tomorrow. Visit us online at http://
