Those interested in becoming a Master Gardener must first attend an introductory half-day session, then complete a series of online classes as well as four hands-on sessions. The first modules will be available starting the end of April. To apply for the 2016 SDSU Extension Master Gardener Program, apply online at the iGrow Master Gardner community page or you may request a form by contacting Graper by email. Online & On-Site Training “Since 2013, the majority of Master Gardener training is offered online so you can get the training in the comfort of your own home or some other location where you have access to a computer, to complete the various modules of the training,” explained David Graper, SDSU Extension Master Gardener Coordinator. The hands-on training sites for 2016 are Brookings, Sioux Falls, Aberdeen and Rapid City. Graper said the location for those sites is based largely on local interest in those areas of the state. “We plan on utilizing the DDN systems, located in at least two of these sites, to broadcast the hands-on sessions to the other SDSU Extension Regional Centers throughout the state so that people that do not live close to one of the four sites this year can still participate,” he said. The four, one-day, handson sessions give trainees the opportunity to learn skills such as planting, pruning, plant propagation, along with plant and pest identification by seeing and doing. These are held in each of the training sites. Participants may choose from each of the locations for their hands-on training. There will also be an initial half-day session for participants to get registered, get acquainted, pick up their training manual and learn the log-in procedure to access the online training. You will need access to a computer and have an email address to access the online training modules. More information will be forwarded to participants as we get closer to the beginning of training. SDSU Extension Master Gardeners Master Gardeners work in their community to promote and teach gardening. Opportunities include writing articles, giving talks, working at fair booths, helping in community and school gardens, teaching and answering garden questions. “The training gives a well-rounded education preparing them to help their communities,” Graper said. Currently, there are about 800 active Master Gardeners and interns across the state. Many Master Gardeners are also active in one or more of the 19 area groups of Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners Share Knowledge In 2015, the SDSU Extension Master Gardeners contributed more than 13,000 hours of volunteer service, worth more than $255,000 to South Dakota individuals, families and communities. There are two options available for training. With the standard application you will receive the training, the Resource Manual and access to the online training. After completing the training and passing a final test, you will be a Master Gardener Intern. To become a full-fledged SDSU Extension Master Gardener, participants are obligated to provide 50 hours of Annie’s Project Held in Presho Beginning May BROOKINGS, S.D. - If you’re a woman involved in the agriculture industry, then Annie’s Project may be the program for you. SDSU Extension is hosting Annie’s Project in Presho beginning May 4, 2016. Is Annie’s Project for you? Have you ever asked a farm/ranch management question and not understood the answer? Have you ever signed papers at the bank or FSA and not really understood what they were for? Have you been thinking about if you have enough insurance or an estate plan? Have you wished you knew more about marketing your cattle or crops? “If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions then you are a perfect candidate for Annie’s Project,” said Taylor Grussing, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist. Grussing explained that Annie’s Project was designed to empower women by providing detailed farm/ranch management information and build networks between women. Over a six-week period, women will learn how to develop financial records, learn key communication skills, ask questions about retirement and estate planning, expand marketing knowledge - all while having fun in a supportive learning environment. Classes meet once a week beginning May 4, 2016 in Presho at Lyman County High School. The classes continue on May 11,18, 25 and June 1 and 8. Each session will run from volunteer service back to the people of South Dakota over the next two years. The cost for the standard training is $160. The second option is available for individuals that want to get the training and resource manual but do not have the desire to become an SDSU Extension Master Gardener. These individuals will receive the same training as the future SDSU Extension Master Gardener Interns but there is no volunteer service requirement and those who do not volunteer, will not become an SDSU Extension Master Gardener upon completion of the course. The cost of that option is $500. Contact David Graper for additional information or if you would like to have an application form mailed to you. niGrow If you read this you know... advertising pays! Johnson, SDSU Extension Weed Science Coordinator. “With the warm temperatures spring pasture spraying should begin soon for biennial thistle and wormwood sage - both noxious weeds. Controlling noxious weeds is the law, however, because there are fewer commercial spray businesses operating in South Dakota, many landowners are having a difficult time scheduling to have their pastures sprayed,” Johnson said. Johnson explains that the noxious weeds are maturing three weeks earlier than normal, making it even more vital that landowners get a handle on controlling them. “Although Canada thistle and spurge are still real small, landowners need to watch closely because these noxious weeds about three weeks ahead of normal this season,” he said. “Not being able to find a sprayer is not a valid reason not to spray these noxious weeds.” Schedule your sprayer today Restrictions may play a role in the fact that many commercial spray businesses are no longer spraying pastures. “If they are, there may be restrictions on the time they will spray, what products they will spray or they may only spray if they also have all of the rest of your spraying business,” Johnson said. “These restrictions are making spraying pastures more difficult and limited.” Due to the limited number of commercial sprayers willing to spray pastures, Johnson encourages landowners to schedule today. “Now is the time to be booking a commercial sprayer,” he said. If a landowner is unable to schedule a commercial sprayer and is faced with task of controlling weeds, Johnson reminds landowners that in order to spray they must have a Private Pesticide Applicator card. “Today, anyone who has a farm that has the potential to gross more than $1,000 of income from their farm is required to have this certification to apply any pesticide to their property, whether or not they are restricted use pesticides,” he said. When applying restricted use pesticides, landowners also need to keep application records for two years following the date they were applied. They also need to have an emergency response plan developed for their farm if they are spraying. To learn more and receive information on this topic, contact Johnson by email.
