The support we receive enables us to serve the needs of those in our community who need assistance. We recently hosted a Wine and Dine event with a live and silent auction which raised nearly $24,000 thanks to the generosity of businesses and individuals in the community. A special thank you to The Center Board of Directors and committee members who spearheaded this annual event.(Dave Hosmer, Duane Frick, Jean Fitzgerald, Darold Loecker, Joleen Smith, Glenn Mannes, Velma Kuchta, John Harper, Chris Nelsen, Kara Payer, Mike Stevens, Heather Olson, Bob Kellen and Don Werkmeister). Also, thank you to our auctioneer Dan Koupal, who made a profound impact on the outcome of the event by conveying the importance of our mission and the difference we make in the lives of so many. We also launched our March for Meals campaign. The goal of the campaign is two-fold, to raise the dollars needed to fund our Meals on Wheels and nutrition operation, and to also create community awareness about the seriousness of senior poverty and hunger. During the past few weeks, we have had 30 city officials volunteering their time and participating in the Community Champions Campaign. We also had tremendous support from our schools through our students and school administrators. Beadle School students had a record breaking year raising $2,100.19 and Yankton Middle School students also broke their record by raising $2,987.48 through their respective coin drives. Stewart School is also raising funds for our By Christy Hauer Director, The Center The Center is a club for adults who are 18 years or older. Our youngest member is 23 and our oldest member is 99. We have something for everyone regarding socialization, recreation and nutrition. We offer a wide array of activities, billiards, bingo, cards(pinochle, hand and foot, bridge, and whist), computer classes, darts, dominos, exercise classes with Judi O’Connell every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a fitness center featuring a NuStep, line dancing, quilting, scrapbooking, table tennis, Wii bowling, and so much more. It costs just $35 a year to be a member, which gives you the opportunity to participate in all our activities. Many of our events are open to the public but members pay less to participate, adding value to your membership. We host a number of dances, tours and travel opportunities to casinos, dinner theatres and more, we host pancake feeds on the second Wednesday of the month and an evening meal on the fourth Wednesday of the month, Sunday movies, and year round holiday celebrations. As a member, you receive a monthly 24-page newsletter keeping you informed of our many offerings. The Center provides many free services. We are currently in the midst of tax season where we partner with AARP. When it is all said and done we will have filed more than 300 individual/family tax forms at no charge. This past year, we assisted 725 individuals through the SHIINE program, helping people with the Submitted Photo Pictured are, from left: Tom Kurtenbach, Sue O’Grady and Kathy Wibbels. tricky Medicare Part D paperwork buffering them from much frustration. This free service saves people thousands of dollars in healthcare and pharmaceutical costs. For low-income seniors, we also have a commodities program, distributing 198 boxes of supplemental food each month. We offer a monthly pet food assistance program for the low income. Research shows that taking care of something adds years to one’s life. Our free services are delivered and coordinated of our many volunteers. We are very proud of our nutrition program. During the past year, we served 48,355 home-cooked nutritious hot meals through the congregate dining effort, our partnership with Hy-Vee and our Meals on Wheels program. In order to sustain our many efforts — from serving nearly 50,000 meals a year, offering numerous recreational and social activities, delivering free services to those who are low income as well as people of all ages — it is essential to raise the dollars needed to continue our mission. Nationwide, the Meals on Wheels program saves our government and taxpayers millions of dollars in long term care costs while keeping our seniors independent in the comfort of their own home. We partner with Hy-Vee to provide seniors with affordable meals in the evening, weekends and holidays. Though you do not have to be a member to participate in the Hy-Vee program, you must stop by The Center to get a scan card and pay for your meals. This year our Rockers raised 95 percent more than last year through our second annual Rockathon raising $15,835 for Meals on Wheels and our Center operation. We had many dignitaries who rocked in a rocking chair for 20 minutes, battling one another to see who can raise the most money to support our efforts. Bill Holst from WNAX raised $3,918, Center member Duane Frick raised $2,335 and Rob Stephenson from First Dakota Bank raised $1,245. We had 22 volunteers rock in the Rockin for Meals Campaign. This year, all three radio stations — WNAX, KVHT and KYNT — were involved broadcasting the need for financial support. The stations also emphasized that The Center provides meals to seniors who are 60 years and older who are homebound via Meals on Wheels regardless of ability to pay. If a senior is in need, they should call The Center at 6651055 to inquire about meals. We are so grateful for the continued support we receive from the United Way, our Board of Directors, Center members and volunteers, churches, service clubs, businesses, individual donors, participating restaurants, and schools/students.
