 3 Potential Trouble
 Signs for Driveways
 Though they are often easy
 to overlook, driveways are
durable parts of a home that
 can greatly impact a home’s
curb appeal. Driveways endure quite a bit of wear and
 tear over their lifespans, and
 homeowners who have not
 given their driveways much
 thought may want to start
 looking for potential trouble
signs that indicate a need for
 some driveway maintenance.
 According to the online
 home improvement resource
HomeAdvisor.com, the average cost of a driveway installation in 2015 was just
 under $3,700. Those costs
are influenced by a host of
 factors, including the size of
the driveway and the material it’s made of. Damaged
 driveways do not necessarily
need to be replaced, as some
 may just need minor repairs.
 But homeowners who see
 any of the following trouble
 signs in their driveways may
 want to consult a professional
 contractor to determine what
 their next steps should be.

Headlight Bulbs (right), which can put up to 100 percent more light on the road.

 3 Ways to Improve Headlights
 for Safer Nighttime Driving

 1. Potholes
 Potholes might be most
 often associated with heavily
 trafficked roadways, but even
Surface cracks in a driveway may indicate a problem
 driveways are susceptible to
 that requires immediate attention.
potholes. As the ground beneath the driveway expands
and contracts, the pavement above that ground weakens and becomes more susceptible to
damage. That damage may ultimately lead to large chunks of the driveway breaking down, creating holes as a result. Homeowners who live in areas that experience heavy snowfall may see
their driveways develop potholes after they are shoveled or plowed. Potholes that are not fixed
may damage vehicles that drive on the pavement, and potholes may even expand over time.
 2. Accumulation of water
Puddles that form during a rainstorm may not be indicative of anything other than a rainy
day. But water that pools or runs down the middle of the driveway may indicate drainage problems. Such problems may be the result of structural problems with the slope of the driveway,
which can cause bigger issues down the road. When water is not absorbed into the ground or
directed away from your home, it can then flow into the house, potentially making your garage
or home susceptible to water damage.

Many motorists find it more difficult to
drive at night than during the daytime. Drivers may fear nighttime driving because they
feel their comfort levels behind the wheel are
compromised when the sun goes down. Statistics show those fears are not unfounded, as
a 2016 analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System found that 43 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States
in 2014 occurred between the hours of 6 p.m.
 and 3 a.m.
But drivers should not simply blame their
nerves for the discomfort they feel when
driving at night. A recent study from the AAA
automotive club found that the halogen headlights in more than 80 percent of the vehicles
on the road today fail to safely illuminate unlit
roadways, even when vehicles are moving at
speeds as low as 40 miles per hour.
To maintain their vehicles, many drivers take their cars and trucks in for routine
oil changes and tire rotations. But headlight
maintenance can go a long a way toward making drivers feel safer at night, when visual acuity of the human eye is reduced by up to 70
percent. The following are three ways drivers
can improve the performance of their headlights.
 1. Upgrade headlight bulbs.
A recent report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety was critical of
headlight design, painting a bleak picture
for headlight performance in 30 of the 31 vehicles tested for the report. Many vehicles on
the road today are equipped with standard
halogen headlights that begin to break down
in two to three years, potentially reducing
light output by as much as 30 percent. Philips X-tremeVision Bulbs employ advanced
technology that can deliver up to 100 percent

 3. Maintain clean headlights.
Drivers wouldn’t spend hours on the road
driving with dirty windshields, but many are
 unknowingly driving with clouded headlamps
that could be compromising their nighttime
visibility and reducing light output by as much
as 40 percent. The Philips Headlight Restoration Kit is designed to restore headlamp lens
clarity to “like new” condition. Utilizing a protective UV coating that produces longer lens
clarity and prevents clouding for up to two
years, the kit can effectively improve lenses
that turn hazy and yellow after years of exposure to sunlight, ozone, pollution and other
 environmental factors.
Many drivers are naturally more nervous
at night than during the daytime. But upgrading headlights and taking steps to maintain
headlight performance can calm those nerves
and make for safer nighttime driving.

 Windshields are designed
 to protect drivers and their
 vehicles from wind and other
 natural elements while the
 cars are in motion.
 Windshields are made
 from tempered glass, which is
processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments
to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While
 relatively strong for a pieces
 of glass, windshields are not
 impervious to damage. All it
takes is a single rock or piece
of road debris to be kicked
up from the roadway and hit
 the windshield to cause a
 problem.
Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other
 small missiles that bounce
up from the road and come
in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with
 no problem, but under high
 speeds, debris can cause
 chips, dings, and even cracks
 in the windshield.
 Cracks easily spread from
 road vibration and heat and
can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your
 car’s windshield is cracked
and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of
 injury. In addition, police
 officers can write tickets if
windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best
 interests to repair damaged
 windshields promptly.
 Drivers may be able to
repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself
 windshield kit available at
 automotive retailers. If a
crack is less than six to 12
 inches long, it can probably
 be repaired as well. However,
 more significant damage will
require that the entire windshield be replaced.

 2. Turn headlights on earlier.
Another way to improve headlight performance is to start utilizing them earlier. Once
manufacturer-supplied bulbs have been replaced, drivers can make a conscious effort
to turn their lights on before the sky goes
completely dark. Many drivers feel their vision is most compromised during twilight
hours, when a setting sun and shifting shadows combine to greatly compromise driver
visibility. By turning headlights on during twilight hours, drivers can counter the effects of
Mother Nature during those hours when they
 feel most vulnerable.

 3. Cracks
Cracking is one of the more noticeable issues that can plague driveways. Many driveways
experience cracking as materials inevitably succumb to the elements. Driveway cracks may develop for various reasons, including poor initial installation. Tree roots that grow beneath the
driveway surface may also contribute to cracking as the driveways ultimately succumb to the
pressure created by the growing roots. Some cracks may prove less problematic than others,
but homeowners should still speak with a contractor if they notice their driveway is starting
 to succumb to cracks.
Driveways may not draw the attention of homeowners too often, but damaged driveways
that go ignored may ultimately lead to very costly problems.

more light on the road than standard halogen
bulbs. Compatible with various makes and
models, each bulb produces a longer beam
 pattern than standard halogen headlights,
vastly improving nighttime visibility on even
 the darkest roadways.
