 ‘Drive’ Time In Yankton
Remedy Drive To Perform In Yankton As Part Of Tschetter Concert Series

 Pierre, S.D. - The South
 Dakota Game, Fish and Parks
(GFP) is reminding campers that the end of the summer doesn’t mean the end
 of camping at South Dakota
 state parks.
 "With the brisk weather
 and changing tree colors, fall
camping is some of the best
camping you can do all year,"
 said state park director Katie
Ceroll. "It’s an ideal time for a
 quiet weekend getaway or as
 a base camp during hunting
 season."
 Camping reservations for
 the South Dakota state parks
 are taken throughout the year
and can be made as late as the
day of arrival. Any sites not
 reserved are available on a
 first-come, first-served basis.
 Additionally,
 campsites
 and cabins at Custer State
Park can be reserved up to
one year in advance, and up
to 90 days prior to arrival at
 all other campsites and cabins.
 Group campsites located
at Custer State Park and Lewis
 and Clark Recreation Area can
also be booked one year in advance. Group lodges that can
be reserved one year ahead of
 time include:

 Gov.
 Daugaard
 proclaims
 September
 Attendance
 Awareness
 Month

 PIERRE, S.D. – With school
 back in session across the
 state, Gov. Dennis Daugaard
 has proclaimed September Attendance Awareness
 Month.
 “In order to succeed in
 school, students are often
 reminded to listen to their
teachers, complete homework assignments on time
 and cooperate with their
classmates,” said Gov. Daugaard. “There is another simple practice we sometimes
 overlook that is absolutely
critical: consistent school attendance. It seems obvious,
but the importance of attendance cannot be overstated.”
 Research indicates that
missing just 10 percent of a
 school year can negatively
 impact student achievement.
That equates to just two to
 three days a month.
The South Dakota Department of Education is working
 to raise awareness about the
importance of regular attendance through outreach to
 schools and other stakeholders.
“Sometimes we have a tendency to assume chronic absence only affects students in
the upper grades,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Melody
Schopp. “However, the research shows that students
 who are chronically absent
 in kindergarten and 1st grade
are less likely to read on grade
level by the time they get to
4th grade. This is an important reading benchmark. Students who don’t meet it are
 likely to continue struggling
 with reading into the future.”
Students who are chronically absent are also at risk of
dropping out of school. By 6th
 grade, chronic absenteeism is
 a proven early warning sign
for students at risk for dropping out, and by 9th grade,
 good attendance can predict
 graduation rates even better
 than 8th grade test scores.
 More information about
 the importance of consistent
 school attendance is available
 at http://attendanceworks.org

fact that a song can inspire hope and
hope can inspire change in a life.
We’re using our music to be a voice
to the oppressed. It doesn’t seem to
make sense to do anything other than
 move forward.”
Having been a musician since the
age of 6, Zach knows what fellow
musicians must do to maintain a love
 of music.
“When I started playing the piano,
 there was something about melodies
that made me think, imagine and
question,” he said. “When you find
a melody that is unique to you, you
need to be honest and chase after it.
Your voice is different than anybody
else’s, so find what makes your song
and keep trying to write that.”
