For Kids Area Schools Excel In NSAA Contest A Wintry Book For Small Kids “Winter, Winter, Cold and Snow” by Sharon Gibson Palermo, illustrated by Christina Song; © 2016, Sleeping Bear Press. 24 pages ——— BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER There’s something hiding in your front yard. Or it might be in the park down the street, or in the neighbor’s fields. You don’t have to be afraid; the thing that’s hiding has been there for awhile, and it’s not at all scary. It’s hiding because it’s “Winter, Winter, Cold and Snow,” as you’ll see in the new book by Sharon Gibson Palermo, illustrated by Christina Song. The snow has fallen and it’s quiet in the forest. You can almost hear a snowflake drop and no one is out except Chickadee. She knows its winter, and she knows that Bear is asleep beneath the drifts. Bear “might wake up when the sun shines …” Yes, Bear gets up and stretches. She knows its cold, just as she knows that Beaver is trying hard to keep warm beneath the ice. Beaver has a lodge over the water that’s filled with mud and twigs, which keeps it warm inside all winter long. Beaver built the lodge himself. Beaver comes out to look around, and he sees Deer. He knows Deer very well; he knows that Deer is aware of everything that surrounds him. For Deer, it’s dinnertime and he’s eating from the trees that are covered in snow. When dinner’s done, Deer knows Rabbit is nearby but he has to look hard. Rabbit is white, almost as white as the snow that’s around them both. All Deer can see are black eyes, pink ears, and a wiggly pink nose because Rabbit doesn’t move, and he doesn’t make a sound. That’s because Rabbit knows Wolf, and Wolf is hungry, too. He’s not paying much attention to Rabbit, though; Wolf is looking for mice and so is Owl. All winter long, they both have to hunt for their supper, and that can take awhile. But in the meantime, it’s quiet in the forest. Some animals are asleep, while some are awake but watching. But will Chickadee change everything? Remember that “long winter’s nap” that Clement Moore promised us? There may be times when it’s hard to get your toddler to take even a short afternoon one, but “Winter, Winter, Cold and Snow” might help. Beginning with a song from a little bird and a rhyme that’s quiet as a midnight snowfall, author Sharon Gibson Palermo brings the energy level down several notches in this book. Yep, it’s a sleepy one; with half the forest animals snoozing and the rest silently keeping watch, there’s nothing here to stimulate or excite a child whose bedtime has arrived. The tale continues with many creatures and a rhyme that’s spare but a cadence that soothes. Add in pages of very simple patchwork-like illustrations by Christina Song, and you’ve got a book that will put your kids right to sleep, in the best way possible. Meant for the littlest readers ages 2 months to 4 years old, this might be a great book for harried parents in need of help with bedtime. They might want “Winter, Winter, Cold and Snow” at the front of their bookcase. Vermillion Shakespeare Festival To Present Comedy VERMILLION — Next summer, the South Dakota Shakespeare Festival (SDSF) has announced it will present Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” June 8-11 in Vermillion’s Prentis Park. In this early play, Shakespeare double downs on comedy as he deals us not only one but two sets of identical twins. As the two heroes travel to the town of Ephesus in search of their long-lost twins, they are mistaken along the way by citizens who seem to know them. As the two strangers become entangled in bad debts, troubled marriages, tawdry affairs and even a visit from a witch doctor, Shakespeare ups the ante with slapstick, shtick and plenty of verbal banter, serving up a true “comedy of errors.” The production will feature an all-star artistic team of seasoned professionals hired from competitive national and regional markets, combined with younger professionals drawn from USD’s Theatre program. Beyond the summer production, the SDSF will launch their second biennial school tour in fall 2017, and will continue to grow their education and outreach programming, engaging youth and adults from across the state with the wonders of Shakespeare. Current educational partners include Vermillion’s SESDAC, Sanford Senior Care Center, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the National Music Museum, Flandreau Indian School, Wagner Public School and Wausa, Hartington-Newcastle and Niobrara all won honors at the Nebraska state one-act play contest, held at the Johnny Carson Theater in Norfolk, Nebraska. • In Class D1, Wausa won first place — and its 10th consecutive state crown — with its production of “The Passion, As Told By The Other Side.” Wausa collected 180 points, while runner-up Osceola had 170. In addition, Gaige Hegge of Wausa won the Outstanding Male Performer Award. Wausa has won five consecutive Class D1 state championships, preceded by five straight D2 state titles, according to the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) website. • In Class C2, Hartington-Newcastle won second place with “Man of La Mancha.” The cast finished with 173 points, just behind champion Pawnee City with 174. Hartington or Hartington-Newcastle has finished as the state champion or runner-up the last six years. Hartington-Newcastle was the Class C2 state champion in 2015 and the Class C1 state champion in 2014 Hartington won the Class C2 championship in 2011, 2012 and 2013. • In Class D2, Niobrara won third place with 168 points with “You Should Never Eat Your Heroes.” In addition, Nate Sandoz of Niobrara won the “Outstanding Male Performer” award. Hyannis won first place with 173 points, while Leigh was awarded second with 168, according to the NSAA website. All students in grades 9-12, including those who are home-schooled, may submit an entry. They can work in teams of 2-4 persons or individually to produce and market their videos on social media. First place prizes of $500 will be awarded to both the creators of the winning videos and to their schools or to a charity if the students are home-schooled. Second place prizes of $250 will be awarded to the creators of the runner-up videos and to their schools or to a charity if the students are home-schooled. Winners will be selected from the following areas: metro Omaha/southwest Iowa (includes: Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie and Shelby counties), metro Lincoln/greater Nebraska (all of Nebraska except metro Omaha), South Dakota and the Kansas Plains (all counties except Franklin, Johnson, Leavenworth, Linn, Miami and Wyandotte). The prize-winning videos will be judged based on how well they adhere to BBB’s brand, express the theme “Start With Trust,” the quality of production and how many times they are viewed on BBB’s YouTube channel — BBB of Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas Plains and southwest Iowa — where the videos will be posted. “In an innovative way, this competition provides an opportunity for high school students to learn the values of BBB — trustworthiness, ethical behavior, reliability and objectivity — and compels them to discover how these values can be applied in their everyday lives. Contestants will also gain valuable marketing experience because they are challenged to get the most views on YouTube by promoting their videos on social media,” explained BBB President and CEO Jim Hegarty.
