Being prepared ahead of time is the only effective way to ensure your safety and your family’s safety in the event of severe weather. Storm Sirens The communities in Yankton County have two (2) different types of siren tones. The first is a steady tone for three (3) minutes. This is to inform you to go inside and get more information on why they are sounding. This sound NOT be confused with the slow wavering tone used to alert the Volunteer Fire Departments of an emergency call. The City of Yankton has six (6) outdoor warning sirens. The towns of Gayville, Volin, Irene, Lesterville, Mission Hill and Utica each have outdoor warning sirens. While the Communities of Yankton County own and maintain the Outdoor Warning Siren system, Yankton County Emergency Management, in conjunction with the Yankton Dispatch Center, are responsible for activating the siren system should it be needed in case of a storm. While Outdoor Warning Siren is an important tool in public warning, they are not a substitute for personal preparedness. Weather radios, weather apps, and local media are also an important tool to receive the alert.
